Some scholars prefer to define civilizations only as societies with enough economic surpluses to create division of labor and a social hierarchy. The chief difference between civilizations and other societies involves the emergence of formal political organizations, or states. Another trait that makes a society a civilization is when the society can produce political units capable of ruling large regions. More traits are when a merchant and manufacturing class is present, and when almost all societies have sedentary agriculture and food surplus.…

First off, the societies of both Egypt and Mesopotamia meet the definition of a civilization because of their customs and traditions. For example, both Egypt and Mesopotamia displayed the need for a ruler. With Egypt, it was customary to believe that the pharaoh brings peace to the land allowing his citizens to live and use the Nile to farm (Doc D). Establishing social classes was another way Mesopotamia advanced from culture to civilization. As cities grew, there was a need of organization within them. Since the largest building in the cities where religious temples, priest did most of the governing, and were the highest power. They also had slaves and freed people and within the freed category, were other social class levels. Because government had become so complex, records needed to be kept. In order to keep records, a form of writing was created, which is also a characteristic of a civilization. Writing started to become more and more common and passed through generations. Forming social classes and a form of writing are more features of a civilization.…

Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Indus Valley civilizations all had their own components in order to keep their society prosperous. Mesopotamians were unified under the priest, the religious figure of society, but then was passed on to the king, who took all the responsibilities of the kingdom. The Mesopotamian civilization also developed a social structure based on a person’s wealth and their contribution to society. In addition, they developed a complex set of laws that had multiple levels of punishments based on a person’s status in society; this was the Law Code of Hammurabi. With all these components, Mesopotamia summed up to be a well organized and powerful civilization. The Egyptian civilization was also unified under one powerful and religious figure, the pharaoh. Egyptian society was far less complex when compared to the Mesopotamians; Egyptians did not have a class division or a system of laws. Egyptian women also had freedom in society then Mesopotamian women. With these lenient components, people in the society most likely are more loyal to their superior. While the Indus Valley civilization weren’t unified under one leader, the society did prosper in their technology and their construction. Buildings were constructed with mud bricks along with organized street systems that resemble modern day streets. The Indus Valley civilization also developed a complex writing system, still un-deciphered today. With their great advances in technology, the Indus Valley civilization was truly a prosperous one out of the three others, but they did not have the uniformity like the other…

Throughout global history many structures of religions formed the basis of social, political, and economic factors of a community. What the members of a religion discovered within themselves, and their faiths, controlled the development of the region in which they lived. Two examples of this were the belief systems of Confucianism and the Greek pantheon of gods, which created the cultures of China and Greece.…

Historians have come up with certain criteria they believe a society must obtain in order for it to be considered a civilization. These criteria are that the society must be stratified, must contain monumental architecture, and must have a formal system of law and order. Other historians may argue that writing must be part of a society in order for it to be considered a civilization, but that is not a criterion that is certainly agreed upon. According to this definition of a civilization, I conclude that both the ancient societies of Mesopotamia and Athens can both be considered civilizations.…

What truly enables civilization to develop is the need for great natural resources, what I find that both Mesopotamia and Egypt had in common was they were close to the water. This helped and benefited them in a lot of ways. A water source helped them form irrigation systems so they could grow their own food and make a profit from it. Water and the rivers were also a means of traveling. If it were not for the water source close to both civilizations they would not have been able to get around the world for trade.…

The third and final civilization is the Israelites. The Israelites were different because their religion is the bases for all their laws and culture. Civilization occurs when a population is made up of people who are advanced in intellectual development, culture, and material. Not only do they have to be advanced in development, but they also have to maintain and progress towards healthy and safe standards of living. The first inhabitants of Canada, the aboriginals, belonged to many tribes, each with its own characteristics and background. They moved from area to area and as they did that, they were able to adapt to the new environment very easily. When the aboriginals are talked about today, they are commonly referred as savages and uncivilized, but in reality they were civilized people. Their tribes consisted of everything that we commonly find in a civilized society such as a form of a political system, roles and responsibilities, culture and religion, and a development in the field of technology and medicine.…
