The app, Instagram, will be used to illustrate the concepts of “complete capture” and “culture of confession.
For the first concept, it can be analyzed by three function in Instagram. Firstly, under the column “explore”, it shows the posts from people that I am not following. Those results are based on people I follow and the photos I liked. It recorded the actions of me and people, who are followed by me, and then self-tracking those caption or hashtag are related to the posts we liked. To what extent and in what ways do you think that Google is extending “imperialism”? If we take into consideration the “right to communicate,” what would a search engine look like according to you?
I agree that Google is extending “imperialism”. According to Dal Yong Jin, “The idea of platform imperialism refers to an asymmetrical relationship between a few developed and many developing countries exist in the case of platforms.” Google is in a dominant position among all the platforms in the world. When we look at the table of top 100 global sites on the Web from September to November 2012 in Alexa.com (2012), Google in USA was rank in the first and 18% in the table was Google. Meanwhile, none of the website from developing countries are on the list.6 Google can raise its capital via advertising in different countries. “There is an intrinsic relation between capitalism and expansion, and that capitalist expansion inevitably takes the political form of imperialism.” (Marx 1867) Google can do the capitalizing and expanding in the same time. For instance, when google earned money, it can put more resources on research and development to invent new service or products. Google now provides map, Google+, gmail, calendar, news, scholar, image search, cloud function and different kinds of advertising services, etc. There are 1 billion active users for Google Chrome and these users may probably be the users of Google’s other services, such as gmail and calendar, because chrome always suggest other products to users.
