In the suffering of the story Rolf Carle is a reporter on a mission to a small town where a volcano has exploded trapping poor Azucena who has little faith left in her with the outcome. Struggling to save her Rolf has little time and no medical help nor the equipment to help her deep down in the foreign clay trapping the young girl. The narrator, the author herself fallen for Rolf wishes her love to change back to who he was before he realized he couldn’t save the girl in the end. To conclude man vs self is when Rolf realizes he was actually the one controlled by fear, ‘He was Azucena; he was buried in the clayey mud; his terror was not the distant emotion of an almost forgotten childhood, it was a claw sunk in his throat.’ Rolf was struggling with his past so long that he can no longer run from it. For man vs nature it’s Rolf against the clay not so much as Azucena because Azucena accepted her fate as Rolf battled with saving the young girl from such a horrible death.
