Lower Richmond is a school that educates from kindergarten to fifth grade. Nothing spectacular comes from this school, as it as just an ordinary elementary school. The school is surrounded by racially segregated neighborhoods. The city is home to many workers. But these workers do not survive off career made jobs, but do off daily tasks. Even though Lower Richmond is trying to thrive, its academic system struggles greatly. The chapter continues to speak of other schools in the area that has predominantly black students. The children do receive aid witch school supplies thanks to help of most teachers from the schools, one being swan school. In conclusion the chapter wraps up by explaining and pushing the importance of Child development. It comes from the adults in their lives. Where we come from is a huge part of shaping the development of our character and personality. In reading Lasch’s chapter, “Racial Politics in New York,” it reminded me of Peggy McIntosh’s hypothetical line of social justice. In sum, she argues that race, along with many other factors (race, class, gender, religion, sexuality), can serve as determinate of what side of the line you are on. Whites tend to be on the top with privilege and blacks on the bottom with disadvantage. Thus, one could conclude that two different developments of character and personality arise. Due to the environment that whites are in, they possess qualities of success, opportunity, and good education. Whereas blacks, due to the environments they are exposed to are qualities of crime, violence, and poor education. Therefore, I could argue that although Sleeper is correct when he argues that New York should stress the problem of class divisions as opposed to racial divisions, I believe those class divisions result from racial inequality. However, within that state, although there is social inequality, Lasch would defend that we must commit to being respecting, self-reliant, and responsible, or else we truly have no chance in equalizing or advancing our democratic society. In this book, written by Johnathan Kohl, we are given a rare and candid glimpse inside the educational system in the city of Boston in the 1960’s. As Kohl describes the treatment that minority students endured at the hands of their teachers, it becomes clear that the title of the book is an accurate depiction of the times. As we read about teachers calling students terrible names and treating minority students with contempt and disgust, it is apparent how the spirit of the students were slowly dying inside. Although this was over fifty years ago, this type of treatment still occurs everyday in schools all over the nation. Whether a child be a minority race, have a learning disability or have behavior issues, it is not uncommon for them to be treated in a way that negatively effects their self esteem, causes them to dislike school and eventually, little by little, takes away their hope. No child should be left hopeless. Everyone needs something to be proud of, whether it be one small talent they possess or just one person who believes in and respects them. It is the job of a teacher to build a child’s self-esteem and self-respect and above all, their hope for the future. Without hope, a child will not aspire or dream. There must be procedures in place to ensure that teachers know what is and isn’t acceptable in terms of interacting with children. I have experienced this first hand in my personal life. My son has Asperger’s syndrome. He can be difficult to handle. Because he misreads social cues he wold often misunderstand what his teachers were asking him and answer incorrectly. These two different topics can easily go hand in hand with each other. Some may not realize it but your level of poverty, whether you are in any way poor or whether you are not even close to it, can truly affect your education. When schools are in a poorer district, that can have a drastic effect in the school. They wouldn’t have the same technology or programs as other schools may have. But that doesn’t always mean they can not have the same opportunities as other kids; It’s all about how they make the most of what they have. Both Wes Moore’s grew up in a very poor and dangerous area, but they did not end up the same way. One decided to take charge in his life and became a Scholar, decorated war veteran, and a White House Fellow. His mother worked very hard to allow him to get all the opportunities that he ended with. She worked multiple jobs to provide for her kids to go to private schools. Moore’s mother didn’t allow him to fall into the “thug” lifestyle. Jonathan Kozol illustrates the grim reality of the inequality that African American and Hispanic children face within todays public education system. Before reading the book “Savage Inequalities” by Jonathan Kozol, I was highly unaware of how poor and neglected some schools are in America. I thought that every school in America had a great educational system and educators, but clearly I was mistaken. I knew that every school in America was not equal; there were obviously some schools that were better than others. For my entire life of schooling, both my parents and I would agree that I constantly complained about the educational systems in which I was enrolled. But when I actually take the time to think about everything I have been through, I realize that I have indeed had an excellent education. My schooling was full of opportunities and experiences, all of which contributed to the person I am today; adequate education has been an indispensable facet of my being. Sadly, not everyone has had this same privilege. And now as a college student, I am becoming even more aware of this sad fact. Throughout the history of the United States, African Americans have been discriminated against in all areas of life including academics. African Americans are still lagging behind their white counterparts in various academic achievement areas. In Oakland High School, only 40.8% of graduating African Americans have completed their UC/CSU requirements. It is a telltale sign that something is wrong. Moreover, there is a growing disparity within the group in that African American females are performing better than their male counterparts. Magnet schools constitute part of the public education system in the United States. However, unlike other public schools, magnet schools were specifically initiated to respond to rampant complaints and protests about racial segregation of the minority groups in the nation.
