Rough Draft
“Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have – life itself”. (Anderson, Walter). The protagonist David in “And Summer is Gone”, faces some hardships with his best friend, as her personality began to change throughout the years – eventually turning her into an egotistic child who only cares about her popularity and status. The protagonist’s unique character traits enabled him to respond in a respectable manner, as he was courteous and accepting of his situation. His first unique character trait was his courteousness towards Amy, as he was always polite and respectful of his surroundings. Even as she began to stop talking to him at school for ill-founded reasons, he took the time to understand her – as David said;” I thought a million times that I understood why”. (Kretschmer, Susie) After taking his own time to understand his and her situation, he was still courteous despite her greedy actions, and respected her decisions. His second unique character trait was his acceptance of the situation. As Amy chose to neglect him, he simply turned towards his artwork and placed his passions somewhere else. Even as she rejected him to the very last moment, despite her impertinent comments, he said,” For I have kept who I am, and it is what I will always be”. (Kretschmer, Susie) No matter what, he maintained an intrepid attitude to the very end. In conclusion, David did not choose to live in the past of his situation – but instead grew from it. He allowed himself to mature as a person who doesn’t hide his true self, nor hide behind a mask. His courteous and accepting character enabled him to be resilient and strong in life. As John F Kennedy said,” Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future,”. (John F Kennedy) David hasn’t missed the future – he’s only begun his adventure.
