more than denotation when I read, because figuring out the word meaning is easier if you use context clues to help understand the definition. Before this school year, writing an argumentative essay was one of my weakest points as a writer.
Our assignment was to write how Edgar Allan Poe died, based on the information we were given in articles. His death was a controversial topic, since no one really knows how he truly passed away. Rabies, alcoholism, and atrial fibrillation were three topics that were discussed. We wrote an argumentative essay on his cause of death to expand and refine our skills as writers. It helped us learn how to properly construct a persuasive essay. In “Anthem,” there are multiple subjects that can be questioned and discussed. One of our assignments, the notice and note sheet, had us use quotes and write what their hidden meaning was from the text. When you cite information from your book, using specific page numbers is an important thing to remember. Being able to use textual evidence in an essay can turn it from mediocre to outstanding. On past exams, we had to write an essay in one hour, which was quite a challenging task. Using ACE paragraphs helped me learn how to write a well written response to an article or prompt. It taught me how to use supporting details to prove my statement. The newspaper project for ¨And Then There Were None” helped me think for creatively and add in some different articles that made the project better. My writing composition has improved tremendously after these
assignments. Overall, the units we worked on in English this year have helped me improve greatly in some aspects I had struggled with. What helped me the most was the newspaper project. Being able to write an essay with several unique articles was something that I enjoyed and something that helped me improve. This information that I have learned this year will help me through my future years in school.
