The skills and training becoming involved with a career of passion, not just economics is what moves Andrew to a higher education. Andrew states “I chose to do this work, 12-hour shifts in a factor” instead of spring break or an easy job at the "Gap" (Braaksma, A.,2005). To find out what it's like to work at a demanding lower paying job while young, affords him his vision of what a higher education can give.
To hone in on the target of discipline, skills, training, and the knowledge that leads to economic security is what Andrew can achieve with a higher education. Andrew states "The things that factory work has taught me--how lucky I am to get an education" (Braaksma, A.,2005) Being assiduous is one key to success, with hard labor jobs being both physically and mentally draining, an education provides discipline, skills, training, and the knowledge that leads to economic security and attaining a career a worker can be passionate about. Working was something he only dreamed about as he would wake up at noon for classes. Life slapped his rose-colored glasses off when he chose to work at factory.
