Andrew Ender's Wiggin: A Short Story
Could you imagine knowingly giving up your entire childhood at the age of six? The average person still depends tremendously on their guardians at this age. For Andrew Ender Wiggin, he was shipped off into outer space with thousands of other children just like him. From there, advisors pushed him and his army to their absolute limits leaving them tired and weak at the end of every day. Some were as young as seven years old! This just proves that anyone child born with an advanced IQ has no say over their life. Ender and everyone else gets taken from their lives and thrown into a meat grinder. The very few that move on, Ender, later get pushed further. When it comes to Command School, there are no limitations.

    If the sSoldiers who initially joined only did an initial tour and went back to the private sector there was a constant revolving door at the initial entry training locations (IET). This createds a high demand for training allocations and increaseds the training budget significantly. Initial entry training can ranged anywhere from 3 months to a year to complete, depending on the occupational specialty of the sSoldier. So if a sSoldier iwas in one of the longer schools he could spend less than a year with his unit. This didoes not allow for strong unit cohesion but. more importantly to policy makers, cost a lot of money. Finding the appropriate solution that would allow the all-volunteer force to draw a larger and better educated population of sSoldiers and retain them would eventually reduce both personnel and training costs. Drawing a better educated group of recruits would help reduce training costs because many sSoldiers would make it half way through the initial entry training before failing out. Every day they were at training was a waste out of limited funds and training seat allocations. Representative McCloskey elaborated on the caliber of Ssoldiers serving in the military by reading an article out of a May 1979 issue of Stars and Stripes:. “450 Soldiers were tested in West Germany, only 7 out of 450 could read, write, and compute at the ninth grade level. This is the army that will have to take on new technical systems. If our troops are stationed at the Brandenburg Gate, or if they are guarding an embassy in Islamabad, they need to have judgment, coolness under fire, good common sense.     Colonel Graff also says, “I won’t lie now, either. My job isn’t to be friends. My job is to produce the best soldiers in the world. In the whole history of the world.”(34) Again, this shows Graff being cold hearted and wanting to focus on his sobjective, which is about creating the best soldiers in the world, at whatever cost. Furthermore, when Major Anderson express concern that they will” screw up” Ender because of the training condition they will put him through, Colonel Graff responds, by saying, “ Of course we will, we’re the wicked witch, we promise gingerbread, but we eat the little bastards alive” (10). Not only is this very callous thing to say about a six- year - old boy, this also how cold-hearted Colonel Graff is toward children in general and Ender in particular. He doesn’t even seem to show much remorse at all; in fact, he seems to think it is funny. Graff doesn’t ever question his own moral character or question his actions because he believes that he is justified in being a ruthless person because he is potentially saving the world. Graff also needs to justify what he is doing to Ender he claims that, “ This is the best for Ender, too. We’re bringing him to his full potential” (173).
