The media plays a major role in the way we perceive certain things. When the discussion of gender arises, we already have an idea of what is deemed as normal. Gender is something that controls our everyday lives, whether we realize it or not. Gender is a very interesting term that is determined when the sex of the human is known. The sex of a person is found due to a number of factors, which are psychological and biological. Gender is achieved through cultural and societal influences. With that being said, gender can be viewed as a mass idea that is acceptable by society. In each country, the meaning of gender has its’ unique differences. Men are expected to live a masculine lifestyle while women are expected to be feminine. These acts are the final determination of society’s view of a real male or female. The United States contains strong values when discussing the topic of gender. Before human life begins, gender is already being ascribed. For example, if a male child is being born into the world, the parents will obviously buy clothes related to male gender roles. What does a boy wear? What color is suitable for a boy? These are questions that many people have based on societal views. There are expectations that must be…
The brevity of the two words had not fallen short of having miles of meaning behind them. They had gathered the meaning of the novel into one and in doing so, served a greater purpose to the reader, who is essentially being represented in the novel through the ward patients. There is no getting around the symbolic use of the combine as society, an inescapable concept in which we all have been placed . Randle McMurphy is our best selves- the difficulty found in how we get to access that part in ourselves amidst such a pressured setting .In the ward, Nurse Ratched holds the most amount of power above not only the patients, but the other people that work there as well such as the doctor; she does this through holding fear above them. As humans, we tend to fall…
Media, like television has conveyed what role a male and female should play in society. For example, television show like “I Love Lucy” demonstrated that a male should be the breadwinner of the house by going to work while the female should stay home so that she can take care of their home and to wait on the husband for authority. That idea has been established way back when and has not changed too much over the years. The author of the essay “Becoming Members of Society: Learning The Social Meanings Of Gender”, By Aaron H. Devor agrees by stating, “These two clusters of attributes are commonly seen as mirror images of one another with masculinity usually characterized by dominance and aggression, and femininity by passivity and submission”(390). Even modern day television shows like “Malcom in the Middle” and “The Simpsons” portray these qualities in a man and women. Not only does television secretly manipulate our thoughts of gender identity, but so does music.…
It’s a Quick Way to Get What You Want”: A Formative Exportation of HIV Risk Among Urban Massachusetts Men Who Have Sex with Men(MSM) Who Attend Sex Parties was an article retrieved from the AIDS Patient Care and STD Journal it was published in October of 2010. The authors of this article are Matthew J. Mimiaga, Sari L. Reisner, Sean Bland, Kevin Cranston, Deborah Isenberg, Maura A. Driscoll, Rodney VanDerwarker, and Kenneth Mayer. The main focus of the research was to investigate the HIV sexual risk behaviors of MSM who reported attending and/or hosting sex parties in Massachusetts in the past 12 months. Men who have sex with men at these sex parties are at greater risk of receiving HIV or an STI due to the fact there are other factors involved like alcohol, drugs, higher mean of anonymous partners, and unprotected sex(Migiaga, 2010). This study took place at the Fenway Health a health care and research facility. There were 40 preselected participants who completed an in depth, semi structured qualitative interview and an interviewer-administered comprehensive quantitative assessment series for a hour and a half. The study/interviews were conducted by one of two trained interviewers. That asked questions like… How would you define a sex party? When did you begin hosting/attending sex parties? Describe the sex parties you attended/hosted? Are condoms and lube available at these parties? What kind of sexual behaviors do men engage in and what HIV and STI risk behavior do you see happening? Do you participate or organize these parties? Any rules involved in your parties? While asking these questions they also assessed psychosocial factors like depression, anxiety, problematic alcohol used and history of drug or alcohol abuse, and the trauma history (like childhood sexual abuse). Results/conclusion of the study suggested that the men who attended these parties are at great risk of…

Fashion and gender have always been closely linked, in many cultures fashion and dress is used to identify gender and can be a powerful indicator of ones political, gender and sexual identity . Nowadays, casual hookups change the way people interact and communicate, which become the popular cultural change throughout the Westernized world. Taken together, Garcia, Reiber, Massey, and Merriwether (2012) discussed different approaches of viewing the topic of sexual hookup culture, whereas Vrangalova and Ong (2014) examined the moderating effect of sociosexuality on four indicators of psychological well-beings and casual sex. Although evolutionary theory explains why hookups are beneficial and valuable to individual, I believe socialization and cultural factor play the most significant role in shaping individual’s behaviors and motivations in casual sex regardless of individual and sex differences.…
To understand the issue of trans-misogyny, we must first define the word(s). Trans-misogyny is composed of two separate words, trans and misogyny. Trans is the shortened version of transsexual, a person who emotionally and psychologically feels that they belong to the opposite sex#. Misogyny is the hatred of women#. So when we speak of trans-misogyny, we mean the hatred of trans-women, so male-to-female individuals. This is another form of discrimination, and hatred, like homophobia, xenophobia and racism, thing that we should root out from within us. But hatred is such a easy thing to do, it is so much more difficult for us to understand and feel compassion towards someone or something we are not, than it is to keep away from them/it and hate them/it. This is part of the human condition, and it is something that we have lived with for centuries.…

Throughout history there has been many different groups that have encountered discrimination. The main group has been the African/African-American population for many years. Other groups have been the Irish, Chinese, Mexicans, and the Jews, just to name a few. Those groups all endured prejudice based on ethnicity; the new group is facing prejudice because of their sexual orientation. The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered community experiences many challenges in society globally. It is a shame that we must be told who we can love or what sex we can be. For the GLBT community deserves as much right as the "straight" community because everyone involved is a human being not an object that…
Gayle Rubin created the sex/gender system concept in the year 1975. She created this term to offer a new way of thinking about the difference between sex and gender. She defined the sex/gender system as “the set of arrangements by which a society transforms biological sexuality into products of human activity, and which these transformed sexual needs are satisfied” (WRWC, 2015). The sex/gender system has many explanations that attempt to address how our sex plays a role in how we learn gender. A few of these theories include: cognitive-developmental theory, social learning theory, gender schema theory, social interactions and gender roles, and lastly, performativity theory. In this essay I will explain how the sex/gender system is created and reinforced from the perspectives of feminist theorists.…
The purpose of this essay is to define androgyny – psychologically as a gender identity and expressive self representation, and as a physical classification by differentiating androgyny from mainstream culture through the aspects of individuality and person. While doing so, the essay will also look at the influences of androgyny on fashion, subculture and mainstream culture and how these factors have influenced the shaping of the contemporary definition of androgyny. The essay will attempt to analyse how the concept of androgyny can elicit a more diverse identity as it liberates personality development from the limitation of gender binary. To do so, it will examine how androgyny has been practised in the past and present subcultures to communicate…
