Child’s Name: Alvern Chew Others involved: Humairah, EeTing & Teacher Donna
Date of Birth: 6 August 2010 Age: 3yearsold
Observation Date: 14 Aug 2013 Time: 0945hrs
Child’s Background: Alvern is the only child in the family. Stays with his parents , grandparents and domestic helper. Tendency to throw tantrum when unhappy.
Setting:
Alvern is making vehicles using shape blocks along with Humairah and Ee Ting. Teacher Donna is seated beside Alvern observing and encouraging their construction.
Description:
Alvern dashes to the corner where the shape blocks are placed. He hurriedly takes out some blocks and begins laying them on the floor beside him. He attempts to make a car. He says, “Alvern make car”. He watches Humairah and Ee Ting playing together for a brief second. He stops and takes more blocks. He pushes all his blocks in between his legs. Humairah approaches Alvern. She takes some blocks. But Alvern pushes block to himself. He says, “No” to Humairah. Humairah looks at teacher. She turns back and talks to Alvern. “Share pls”. Alvern says very loudly with his index finger waving at her,”No! Mine” Teacher Donna takes a block from him and says, ”Alvern could you kindly share your toys please?” He moves his head from side to side saying no again.Humairah takes block from teacher. Alvern quickly snatches the block. Teacher Donna stops his play. She makes him stand infront of her. Alvern looks away. Teacher Donna makes eye contact with him. She queries,”Alvern,do you want your friends to share their toys with you?” Alvern nodded. She continues,”Then Alvern must share too,ok?” Alvern nodded and said “ok” in response. Alvern apologises to Humairah. They hug each other and say “Friends”.
Alvern gives his blocks to Humairah and engages in play together with her.

Conclusion:-
In this anecdotal, it seems that Alvern is a creative child and is able to initiate his own play by beginning to construct a car. He does not seem comfortable with sharing his toys as he took his share of blocks and kept it to himself even before his friend asked him to share. He seem very upset and used a loud voice and stern body language to display his unhappiness. Alvern needs more role playing in sharing and guidance to help him to share.

    2. It seems very clear to me that at 8 months old, Pearson had a slow to warm up temperament. He would cry when I would take him to daycare, but would get over the sadness relatively quickly after having a chance to adjust to the new situation. Another example of this temperament is how he would cling to me when around strangers, and would interact with them cautiously. I didn’t want to push Pearson be someone he wasn’t, so I always chose to introduce him to novel situations slowly. Now that he is 10, I would say his personality is undercontrolled. Pearson is slightly aggressive, such as yelling at my partner or me and overreaching to minor disagreements in kindergarten. This behavior made it difficult for him to make friends, so I tried to help him get more experience in social settings by inviting other children over to play. The aggression has lessened some, but he still needs to work on impulse regulation.…

The parents are so used to their children's practices and games that it forced them to leave out of boredom. The activities put a strain on the parent and child relationship since “the impact of children's activities takes its toll on parents patience as well as their time” (48). This form of childrearing is ineffective since the communication between the parents with the child is weak. Lareau states, “More common are conversations like the one with Mr. Tallinger, described above, and the one with Ms. Tallinger, described below” (46).The Tallinger children are unable to interact with children outside of an activity simply to have child-initiated play. For example, Sam at the age of four is already aware of his older brothers commitments and understands that he will have to sacrifice the invitation. As a result, this demonstrated that “Garrett nor spencer typically [have] long stretches of time to organize or define himself” (44). Moreover, normal events that children his age get excited about do not seem to appear to matter to Garrett. Garrett is unable to interact as an individual without the use of sports with other children his age. Lastly, the children's exhaustion result in moodiness. This effect is not seen “in the working-class and poor children” since they are not worn down every second of the day. As Lareau recalls, a pattern of “falling apart” occurs a few times each month with each child since they're unhappiness…

The child I chose to observe was a 6 year old boy that I will refer to as Timmy. Timmy is an intelligent, active little boy who reportedly struggles with behavior. Timmy lives with his parents. He has two 14 year old half sisters one of each belonging to his mom and dad prior to them meeting and getting married. The sisters live in the home with Timmy part time. I observed Timmy in his afternoon childcare classroom from 10:55am-11:55am. The classroom was spacious with large windows along one of the walls over looking the playground. The remainder of the walls displayed art work created by the children. The room had clearly defined centers such as a Writing center with pencils, colored paper and pumpkin shaped paper punchers. A Library with two small couches, a house plant and an assortment of books. A Sensory center with orange water, small real pumpkins and circle shaped measuring utensils. A Block center with cars, a long wooden ramp, safety glasses and large brick blocks. The classroom also had Dramatic play, Art, Group and Science centers.…
