Here are the 4 stages of anesthesia performed with general anesthetics. Stage 1- Analgesia-The patient experiences analgesia but is still conscious enough to carry on a conversation.Stage 2- Excitement- The patient may experience delirium. Their blood pressure rises and becomes irregular, and then there breathing rate increases. This stage is sometimes not used because they use sodium pentothal, before the anesthesia. Stage 3- Surgical Anesthesia- During this stage, the skeletal muscles are relaxed, and the patient's breathing becomes regular. Eye movements slow down until they come to a stop, and then surgery can begin. Stage 4- Medullary Paralysis- This stage only happens if the respiratory centers in the medulla oblongata of the brain that control the breathing and other vital functions cease to work. The patient can die if they're not revived quickly. This stage should never be reached. Careful control of the amounts of anesthetics administered will prevent this occurrence from ever happening.
