How Frank Survived

Poverty is something that many of us will never have to face. I never could have survived growing up the way Frank McCourt did with the constant dampness of things, an alcoholic father, religion shoved down my throat and family members dying left and right. It makes you wonder how he and his family did it. Was it that he was happy with what he had or was it more than that? Frank may not have had many materialistic items or a very good father but he did many things that helped him along the way. Stories of heroes and other fiction, father figures and dreams all kept him going and not giving up hope.
Literature in any form was something that seemed to bring Frank comfort and enjoyment. Once he said that Shakespeare was like having jewels in his mouth. The words of books had more meaning to Frank than most would have gotten out of it. Books allowed Frank to go off to different places. “It’s lovely to know the world can’t interfere with the inside of your head”. (202) They allowed much time to pass and gave him things to think and dream. Yet while he was still poverty stricken and adults wanted to rule his whole life, including his mind, he always had what he has learned and the stories he read kept to himself that no one could take away. In Barbara Ehrenreich's New York Times article, “Too Poor to make the News”, she investigates a phenomenon that has been swept away by the waves of media headlines about “middle class cutbacks” and “the super-rich giving up private jets”. (pg 322) She talks to people she met while writing her book “Nickel and Dimed” and uncovers stories of people whose ends could not be met before the recession, and are even less likely to be met now with increasing layoffs, foreclosed homes, and unavailable loans. She describes the problem well, and provides several sad tales, including one about her own nephew and his family's problems. She raises a crucial issue. Accepting the ways in which poverty is…

I have never lived in poverty but I have also never lived a considerably wealthy life. From reading this book, my perceptions of poverty and prosperity have pretty much stayed the same. Many times I associate fast food workers with poverty, or when I see an elderly woman working at WalMart I also associate that with poverty. I cannot recall a time that I ever thought that the sixty year old checker at WalMart could possibly be rich. As horrible as it may sound, I usually, unconsciously think that anyone that works in any low wage job must be in some state of poverty. I do appreciate what these people do for society, but at the same time, I am not going to feel sorry for these people either. I do not think that low wage workers should in any way be disrespected but at the same time, as much as people will argue this point, everyone has a choice in what they do with their life. Low wage jobs are a pain in the butt and they are not always fair and they are hard, but someone has got to do it. I believe that if someone does not want to live that lifestyle, they do not have to. I would not say this if I did not have proof from personal experience. My mom never went to college and because of that if she…

Poverty is something that will bring you down a dark path if you let it. It’s needs and problems will only pile if you don’t take action. In poverty there will be people holding you up and providing you a platform to grow, but it is up to you if you want to step off of their help and into the life of uncertainty that comes with it. But in poverty the most important thing you can have, is people who will provide you with a good platform and lead you to stay with it, and not people who will stand there and simply not care…

Now in days, television shows and movies depict the poor as people with no ambition, no dignity, people who cannot be happy with themselves while living in poverty. These negative stereotypes often fill people with a stigma of being or becoming poor. Many of us in this generation, who grew up in poverty or with blue-collar workers as parents, have dealt…

Though John Scalzi never reveals his own experience with poverty like Jeanette, his biography tells us that he was spent his childhood in California in poverty and was able to work out of it similar to Jeannette Walls. John takes on a “no tolerance” attitude when it comes to stereotypes about the poor, especially victims of hurricane Katrina that hit in 2005. The reason he wrote “Being Poor” was because of the people asking why everyone did not just leave when they were told to and avoid the hurricane. He answered in his essay indirectly that these poor southern people do not have reliable transportation, live hand-to-mouth, and have nowhere else to go even if they had the means to get there. Hurricane Katrina was the costliest hurricane in the history of the United States, and the sixth strongest overall. The severe destruction left many losses of life and property damage, but for the poor it was the worst. John Scalzi wrote this essay for the ignorant people wondering why the poor in New Orleans did not just leave when the hurricane came. The details he gives describe on an everyday basis what these families are going through. “Being poor is clutching that box of Raisin Bran and trying to think of a way to make the kids understand that the box has to last” gives many details in one line. Raisin Bran is a simple type of cereal and one that can be off-brand. Trying to make the kids understand it has to last is showing that many times that box might be all a whole family has for a month. This was the largest natural disaster in the history of the United States, and people are asking the poor why they did not leave. Many think that it is easy to move out of poverty, but they have never experienced true poverty before. Many families are single-parent households who wake up and work all day,…

Is it possible for individuals to rise from being raised in poverty and be successful in their adult life? Jeannette Walls is living evidence that this sensation is possible. Within her memoir, Jeannette describes living in poverty for the majority of her life and what events led to her rise out of this state an into a stable life situation. Throughout Jeannette’ life, poverty was a present factor in everyday life. According to the 2016 census about eighteen percent of children under the age of eighteen are in poverty (Bureau, 2017). There were many predominant factors in Jeannette’s life that were affecting her such as her father’s alcoholism and her mother’s priorities, but poverty was one of the most influential. Poverty impacts children’s…

They just need to be keep their head up. It’s also evident that people can stay in poverty for their whole life, if they don’t try to get out of it. Poverty still exists in many places, just as it did in Oliver Twist. “22% of all children live in families that are in poverty in the modern day world”.
