When John and Lorraine are first invited to Mr. Pignati’s house in the beginning of the book, Lorraine is hesitant. She does not want to go near Mr. Pignati’s house, but John, persistent as ever, convinces her. “I’ve been thinking, and I’ve decided we’d better go over and collect the ten bucks, says John. I’ve been thinking, and I’ve decided we’d better not go over and collect the ten bucks, angrily replies Lorraine” (36). John, the narrator, portrays himself to be a very greedy and careless person. However, Lorraine’s wariness allows her to see the possible consequences of entering an unknown person’s house. When the two finally befriend Mr. Pignati, a budding relationship between them starts to grow. Mr. Pignati kindly invites John and Lorraine to the zoo and John immediately accepts, dragging Lorraine along with him. “I should have just left there and then because I know things were going to get involved” (57). Lorraine seemingly rues the day that she agreed to go to the zoo with John and Mr. Pignati. Zindel uses foreshadowing, when saying “things were going to get involved”, to demonstrate how close the trio will become. Lorraine and John take Mr. Pignati as a lonely old man, and are blind to the good things Mr. Pignati gives them until he dies.…

At first, it was odd to see how something as simple as a piggyback ride could bring about such happiness, but when I observed the surroundings, I quickly understood why. It was happiness that was hard to come by considering the conditions these children were living in. Their homes were rickety, would-be shacks. The roads weren’t in any better condition either, soiled in human and animal waste. Yet these children, who had hardly any possessions of their own, whose basic needs were not met, needed only the momentary gift of a capuchi to fill their lives with indescribable joy in the midst of such dire circumstances. Consequently, in their need I began to realize how much I had in my possession. As different our worlds were, however, without love, the need for food, shelter, and financial security had…

The protagonist loves spending every afternoon in the Museum of Vain Endeavours. She is the usual and only visitor who is interested in reading about the different Vain Endeavours and she is specifically looking for one kind, but she never mentions what she is looking for. This museum contains many volumes of historical failed attempts, which are also dated to the present, that are made by people who continue to recreate them. Since she’s the only visitor, she always attracts the attention of an attendant, Virginia, who is the only employee around who works at the museum. Virginia gives to her different catalogues of Vain Endeavours recorded by specific years. These Vain Endeavours are specifically grouped first by year, letters, and then by numbers. After she returns the catalogues to Virginia, she’d usually contemplate about what she read as well as listening to Virginia’s insight about the difference of each year’s history. She would always think to herself about how curious it is for people to repeat Vain Endeavours, which is the repetition of many failed attempts, and if it were to be written, it would take up too much space. Sometimes she would talk aloud about some stories of Vain Endeavours from the book to Virginia. An interesting fact that Virginia shares was that only a tiny percentage of all the Vain Endeavours that…
