ABSTRACT:
Introduction
Process Industries handle fluids (liquids and gases) and solids. While much is known about how to characterise and specify a fluid system, the subject of solid particle characterisation, storage of solids and flow characteristics of solids are complex and have received considerable research. There have been many cases of sudden surges of powder flow from storage bins called powder floods. In nature an avalanche – sudden surges of ice- is a typical example of powder flood .

The objective of this paper is to study the flowability characterestics of different solid materials like sand and house hold grocery materials.
If a material flows easily it has a low angle of repose and if it does not it has a high angle of repose. The angle of repose is influenced by the following factors.
1 Particles of uniform size flow easily and hence low angle of repose.
2 Particles of irregular shape because of interlocking donot flow easily and show high angle of repose.
3 Solid materials of different structure like granular, fibres etc show different flowabilty characteristics and hence different angle of repose.
4 Moisture content in the solids prevent flowability and hence high angle of repose
Since in chemical process industries and food processing industries large quantities of solid materials are handled ,they are stored in bins. Draining the materials from the bins demand easy flowabilty. Therefore large no of research papers have appeared on the study of angle of repose.
Measurement:
A granular material can flow from a
