The reason why most of the important sources from this book are private diaries written by Soviet kids during the 1970s is because it gives the readers an opportunity to compare personal thoughts of young people of western cultural products from diaries. In this way it recreates a real social history of the Brezhnev era.…

In Skrzynecki’s 10 Mary Street, the “still too narrow bridge” is symbolic of his fractured identity which presents the greatest barrier to his sense of belonging. Every morning, Skrzynecki “hides the key (to the house)/ under a rusty bucket” before school. This action of hiding the key is metaphorical for him locking away his Polish identity before going to school. The use of anaphora “for nineteen years”, further emphasises the length of time has kep the two faction of his identity…

Home is a place central to relationships and therefore family and a sense of belonging. In the poem both sense of belonging and no-belonging the Skrzynecki`s felt are revealed. Peter opens the poem nostalgically, `for nineteen years` and `each morning` in a repetitive way that reinforces a regular, comfortable and homely existence. The adjectival phrase, `under a rusty bucket` represents the longevity of their time living in the house which suggests a place where they feel they belong and are secure as they hide the key under a bucket. Moreover, the simile `like adopted children ‘reveals the effort and devotion of the poet`s parents to their special children. The description of the house, painted in a `china-blue coat` suggests protection from a harsh environment. However their ability to feel a lasting sense of safety is taken away by the council`s decision to pull down the house, thus we see that while belonging is attached to places of significance, it can be impermanent and affected by forces beyond our control. The communal haven of togetherness, ‘we lived together` characterizes the author`s firm connection with his family. Thus we see that belonging amongst people with similar experiences and relationships is illustrated through positive allusions, using, `head discussions and embracing gestures`.…

Peter skrzynecki explores and addresses his cultural heritage that is personal and beyond. He has a sceptical imaginary image of his homeland. The pictorial scene of warsaw has a strong impact on him. He has lack of knowledge of the place he came from ``Warsaw Old Town” ``I never knew you Expect in third person”., He has a thought, that the image of the ``old town might wake his father’s pride in his homeland and his mother beloved Ukraine”, what’s my choice to be. He wants to not only understand but to reflect on the place where he came from. The post card seems to invite him home and there’s a simple voice of explanation to answer `` WE will meet before you die’’. When your own cultural identity is marginalised you can feel dislocated and displace. When humanity experience a strong connection to a place the connection and ability to explore is strengthen and enriched.…

Szymborska’s poem, “Brueghel’s Two Monkeys,” starts in an odd way. The reader is thrust straight into the scene of an exam, which at first seems all too familiar. However, Szymborska surprises the reader when the voice says what she dreams about as she takes the final exam, “two monkeys, chained to the floor.” This is a very odd image and one that is not easily identifiable to the reader initially. The poem contains two meanings, first in the context of the 1956 workers' riots and student demonstrations that led to the crisis and compromise of October where Poland was taken over by Stalin. These events provide a context for the reading of the poem as a reference to Stalinist oppression. Another meaning for the poem is that it is an ecphartstic poem, a poem about a painting. It stands to reason then that the poem is about the relationship between language and reality. The monkeys could convey signs of anxiety and strain in Szymborska’s art; in that, they are a metaphor for whether or not a poets meaning is expressed accurately. There seems to be multiple meanings articulated and supplemented to by the form and structure of the poem and this is the ground for the further study of, “Brueghel’s Two Monkeys.”…

    Scopes Trial Essay

The twentieth century Scopes trial may have started out as a simple debate between evolutionists and creationists, but quickly escalated to a debate of historic proportions. The 1920s were times of change in the United States, from women getting the right to vote to prohibition to changes in education, such as the Butler Act, which created unease and animosity throughout the country. The Butler Act of 1925 prohibited the teaching of evolution and any other theories that deny the story of the divine creation of man as taught in the Bible in all Universities and public schools in Tennessee. John Scopes, a high-school biology teacher in Dayton, Tennessee decided to test this law. He was found guilty of teaching evolution to his high-school students despite the Butler Act, resulting in a court trial that brought strong personalities of both the North and South into one courtroom. These conflicting personalities brought to light the real reasons behind the intensity of the trial. Fear played a big part in the trial because creationists and traditionalists truly feared the rejection of God, the Divine Creation of man and the Bible because they feared for the morality of civilization. As the times changed there was more pressure for Americans to modernize their ideas but traditionalists believed these changes caused people to stray from the word of God and the Bible and had no desire to change their God-fearing ways. Antipathy was also growing stronger between the North and the South resulting in biased opinions on many subjects. The Scopes trial controversy was more complicated than a simple debate between evolutionists and creationists because of the fear and bias generated in a time of advancement from traditionalism to modernism.…
