testing involves. To be brief, cosmetic testing involves using majority of guinea pigs, rabbits and mice to test for abnormalities in cosmetic and personal care products. Each ingredient in a cosmetic or personal care product needs to be tested so that it is safe to use. For example, the acute inhalation toxicity test involves using 20 rats to determine if the substance being inhaled causes death. “A rat is placed into a tube and forced to inhale the test substance. She or he may experience bleeding of the nose, convulsions, paralysis, seizures, and/or death.” These tests that are using animals for commercial purposes often causes more abused than good for humanity. Brutal tests like the acute inhalation toxicity test provide a harsh reality for animal test subjects, which are very inhumane and also lead me to my first point. It is no question that using animals for cosmetic purposes is inhumane. It is shocking to find out that animals used in these experiments are regularly exposed to ill treatment like food and water deprivation, prolong periods of physical restraint and infliction of burns and other wounds. The abuse these animals are receiving serves no justice for studying chemicals that may cause harm to human beings. “The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported in 2010 that 97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief, including 1,395 primates, 5,996 rabbits, 33,652 guinea pigs, and 48,015 hamsters.” These statistics illustrates just how messed up cosmetic testing really is. While these animals should be receiving love and care, scientists are killing them off to create new mascara or lipstick. The study itself is very impractical as there are other methods to test new chemicals for cosmetic and beauty products.
