One part of this waste is the billions of pounds of tainted slaughterhouse meat that the farms produce every single year they are in operation. They also produce billions of pounds of raw manure that has to be stored or disposed somewhere. A lot of times this is not done in the most environmentally friendly ways. In one case 35,000 gallons of pig waste were dumped into a Missouri creek on accident. This was a very costly accident and had a fairly large negative impact on the ecosystem in this area. This also contaminated the water table in the surrounding miles of land. The 1 billion pounds of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides used each year also get caught in runoff and contaminate our water supply in their own ways. Added on top of that is the billions and billions of pounds of fertilizers used each year which also contaminate our water source and make our water purification process even more difficult which in turn makes it more costly.
