Animal Farm Essay
“Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely”-Lord Acton This describes how people can abuse power. There is corruption in power in the novel animal farm. Power affects the animals, the events and the outcome of the book. The power effects Napoleon, Squealer, and the farm as a whole.
Napoleon is essentially the leader of animal farm. He is granted much power because he fills the role of a leader. He abuses his power because he wants to benefit himself and other pigs. He makes the animals work, he makes them have reduced rations of food, while he has increased rations and he does little to no manual labor. He abuses he military (the dogs) he makes them kill other animals.
Squealer has a great amount of power on animal farm because he is napoleons true comrade, he shares ideas with napoleon, and they have the same interests. Squealer has a unique talent; he has a great ability to speak well. He can convince animals to do things, or he can persuade even some of the smarter animals that what the pigs are doing is right. He is pig who spreads Napoleon’s propaganda among the other animals. He twists language to maintain governmental control.
The farm as a whole is greatly affected by abuse of power in the novel. The animals eventually forced to work even harder than in Jones time with reduced rations. Key animals such as Boxer (representing the working class) are not treated as they should because they are the hardest workers. Boxer is so blinded by napoleons power and intelligence he is never shown justice in his work.
In the world today many governments abuse their power. Even in America people use propaganda and the twisting of language to abuse power, just like squealer. Many governments abuse their military like Napoleon. Also many people become abused like the working class in America. The pigs are like the government and higher class, just
