"Unlike the Holocaust, Stalin's murders are forgotten: dust blowing in the wind" (Robert Harris). George Orwell's Animal Farm is a satirical allegory. Rebelling against farmer Jones, the animals of Manor Farm decide to run the farm themselves. After driving Jones out, the pigs declare themselves in charge. Orwell's fictional farm is a representation of the Russian revolution of 1917. The animals represent the main figures in the Russian revolution, namely Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky, and Stalin's Propaganda Department, which publicly broadcasts flaws in the ideology of communism.…
Joseph Stalin was the most ruthless dictator throughout history. The book, Animal Farm written by George Orwell, was an allegory of how Stalin harshly ruled over the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953. Animal farm follows a group of animals who wanted a utopia and while striving for this goal, made a dystopia. When the animals took over the farm, the leaders became the pigs since they were the most intelligent. Overtime a pig named Napoleon took complete control of Animal Farm using various methods of deception. Napoleon stays in charge of Animal Farm by using Animalism, fear and propaganda.…
A famous author named Richard Wright once said, “All literature is a protest”. In simpler terms, books have been written to raise awareness about problems in order for humans to find solutions for them. This quote is true because in most works of literature the author makes their characters go through difficult obstacles to overcome that not everyday people go through. The book Night was written to protest against anti-Semitism, which means hatred towards Jews. This book took place during the Holocaust where times were hard and unforgettable for the Jews. The main character Elie takes the reader on a grieving journey where he describes his accounts from the Holocaust where he was mistreated and was seen as an outsider. On the other hand, the book Animal Farm by George Orwell was written to alert the world about totalitarian leaders and perplexed people. Totalitarian leaders had control over society, which gave them the right to mistreat their people and abuse their power. Napoleon who was the main villain of…
Rodents destroying the yard is one of the most obnoxious things to deal with as a homeowner. An animal in the middle of the road is about as annoying, especially if a driver is in a rush. “Woodchucks,” a poem by Maxine Kumin, is directly about a person killing off the woodchucks in his/her yard. William Stafford’s poem, “Traveling through the dark” is about a driver who came upon a dead pregnant doe in the road, who’s fawn is still alive, and whether or not to make the decision about whether to push the doe off the cliff with the fawn inside or to save the unborn fawn’s life. Both poets, Kumin and Stafford, contrast the theme of inhumane acts carried out by a darker force, while also comparing the personification used in both poems.…
John F. Kennedy once stated “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. In other words, if we can’t resolve our problems peacefully, then violent revolution is bound to happen. This is true because in life when people cannot get what they want peacefully, they turn to violence. The pieces of literature which prove the quote true are the book; Animal Farm written by George Orwell, and the song; “The International” written by Eugene Pottier. Animal Farm relates to this lens because the animals have a revolution which turns out to be entirely violent, and not at all peaceful. “The International” relates to the lens because it is about the servants coming together to fight for their freedom instead of peacefully working towards it.…
In the novel Animal Farm, George Orwell hints that power corrupts through the use of an allegorical storyline. By using historical criticism, one can analyze the causes and effects of ruthless ambition. During the WWII era, there was widespread corruption in many nations, as seen in Germany with Hitler and Russia with Stalin. This time period of chaos exposed the lack of compassion among humans. Similar to this era, there were cultural and political struggles among the humans and animals in the farm as well. Ironically, in the animal’s struggle to free themselves of human dictatorship they end up oppressing their own kind.…

The revisionist history casts a false light on actual events and misrepresents reality. The book Animal Farm is a vicious assessment of the history and rhetoric of the Russian Revolution. Retelling the story of the emergence and development of Soviet communism in the form of an animal fable, Animal Farm allegorizes the rise to power of the dictator Joseph Stalin. In the novella, the overthrow of the human oppressor Mr. Jones by a democratic coalition of animals quickly gives way to the consolidation of power among the pigs. In the fable the pigs use revisionist tactics to maintain control over the other animals and to maintain secrecy and sovereignty. The revisionist tactics are displayed in many ways throughout the book, more particularly with the Seven Commandments, Snowball’s role in the Battle of Cowshed, Napoleon’s role in the Battle of Cowshed, and Boxer’s death.…
In 1932 and 1933, Ukraine took part in one of the biggest genocides the world has ever seen. Although unlike the Holocaust, it never really got much exposure due to the Soviet Union’s tactics of hiding this disaster. The Soviet Union made sure no foreign journalists were able to enter the country, although they did allow a few communist journalists to view what was happening. These communist journalists wrote lies saying that they didn’t see any evidence of the Ukrainian people being starved (Perloff). This tragic event seamlessly went unnoticed to many people, but the Ukrainians would never forget what happened.…
Animal Farm is most famous in the West as a stinging critique of the history and rhetoric of the Russian Revolution. Much like the Soviet intelligentsia, the pigs establish themselves as the ruling class in the new society. The struggle for preeminence between Leon Trotsky and Stalin emerges in the rivalry between the pigs Snowball and Napoleon. In both the historical and fictional cases, the idealistic but politically less powerful figure (Trotsky and…
The Holodomor-Stalin’s Holocaust The Holodomor was a vast famine that took place in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933, that millions of Ukrainians died of starvation. This was the deliberate mass starvation of an entire country that was carried out under the orders of one of the most brutal leaders in all of history, Josef Stalin. The Holodomor means “murder by hunger” that is what the Ukrainians called it by, and it would leave about ten million people dead.…
The story Animal Farm is not just one of farm animals working for human beings. Rather, the tale gives us insight of the Russian Revolution and what occurred during and after the event, the animals functioning as certain historical figures and groups. George Orwell, in Animal Farm condemns and criticizes the actions and injustices that occurred during the reign of Joseph Stalin with the evil character Napoleon. As the farm animals are encountered with no freedom, no equality, and are being slaughtered by their own kind, Orwell illustrates the misinterpretation of a Utopian society and the wrong turn rebellion can take with the wrong leader in charge.…
Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is a satire, which criticizes the Russian leaders, government, communism, and world powers. It shows how an uneducable lower class can lead to social corruption in the fictional world and real world. Orwell shows Stalin and Trotsky as the leaders of Russia, in a way, in which the nation of Russia and the world had never seen before; he portrays the world leaders as animals on a farm that wish for a rebellion. Mr. Jones treats the animals on the farm atrociously and consequently they long for freedom from the humans. However, the animals later realize that their freedom was not everything they wish for. The book includes many ideas from the Russian rebellion, the injustice of communism, and the struggles of the lower class in Russia. Animal Farm demonstrates that when many leaders come together and others blindly follow, social corruption and inequality may occur.…
In the modern era propaganda is used widely, more so than people recognize every day. Information, ideas or rumors are deliberately spread widely to harm or help others, is propaganda. One could describe propaganda as persuasive, or an advertisement to try and win you over to accomplish things they would like. These advertisements can be good or bad, depending on the seller, how they represent the things they want from you and how you portray the message. Being showcased in this article different types of propaganda will be used from Animal Farm to compare it to modern propaganda.…
