Animal Farm Minor Characters
Mikayle Vaughan October 7, 2014 George Orwell’s Animal Farm is an allegorical novel of the failed Russian Revolution. The animals of Animal Farm live under the control of their farmer, Mr. Jones. The animals are taught to rebel against the only real enemy they have. As the novel progresses, the farm falls under the control of the pigs. The events of the story unfold as a result of the actions of characters such as Mr. Jones, Old Major and Squealer. These results would not have been possible without the blind faith of the animals. Mr. Jones plays a minor role in the events of the story. He is “Lord of the Animals.” He uses this power to oppress the other animals and belittle them. Without Mr. Jones’ harsh reign or the animals, they would not have rebelled against him. He was inhumane, going out and getting drunk, not feeding the animals for days. Old Major pointed this out to the other animals. It is crystal clear that all of the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings. The animals grew a sense of hate towards Mr. Jones. This is an example of how the opinion of the animals is an important factor of the rebellion. Without Mr. Jones treating them so harshly, the animals would not have needed to revolt. Old Major, a prize white boar, was highly inspiring with his speeches of equality and such, “that everyone was quite ready to lose an hours sleep to hear what he had to say.” He created the idea of animalism by putting forth the idea that “no animal must ever live in a house, sleep in a bed, wear clothes, drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, touch money or engage in trade.” Old Major blamed “man” for all their problems. These principals were taken up by most of the animals without any arguments. Without Old Major, the animals would not have had the inspiration and motivation to rebel. Squealer was also a boar, but unlike Old Major, his interest was not in helping the farm as a whole. Squealer is the go to pig

The primary issue that Old Major has with the principle of working for man is that the animals do the work for no benefit, while Mr. Jones lives a life of excess. Old major is disgruntled by the fact that the man barks orders at his animals, and the animals remain malnourished and neglected even though they do the bulk of the man’s work. Soon after Napoleon and Snowball seize control of Animal Farm, as the animals work tenaciously in the fields, the pigs “…did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others” (50). The pigs’ integrity continues to decline as the story unfolds; the reader sees that they become more akin to the parasitic man which they had sought to be liberated from than diligent leaders they portrayed themselves to be. The pigs, who have taken the place of man at the farm, now begin to reap the benefits of the other animals’ work.…

The novella, Animal Farm, satirizes the lifestyle of Stalinist Russia. The author, Eric Blair, known by the pseudonym George Orwell, uses a farm in which every animal and conflict is allegorical to the lifestyle of the Soviet Union. In the story, Orwell portrays how the animals are unaware of their power similar to the working class in Russia. After the rebellion, which represents the Russian Revolution, the animals anticipate an exponentially better life that consists of bigger rations, proper care, and a society with no social classes and equality among all animals, similar to communism. The pigs, who are naturally the leaders, create a list of commandments, but due to the lack of education among the farm animals, the pigs sum up the commandments…

“All Animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (p. 114). The pigs were the smartest animals on the farm. They had the ability to persuade the other animals to agree with the principles of Animalism. They were the brains of the revolution. When other animals talked about loyalty to Mr. Jones, the pigs explained to them that those ideas were contrary to the spirit of Animalism. The pigs used propaganda such as telling the animals "Surely you don't want Jones to come back?" in order to scare them and indirectly force them to cooperate. They also considered themselves superior to others since they had given themselves the right to take all the milk and apples. Squealer was the brilliant talker and a master manipulator. He was able to convince all the animals that pigs do the most important work on the farm and therefore they needed to maintain their health. The propaganda he used to justify the pigs taking the milk was to show the pigs as unselfish. He made the animals believe and understand that although pigs didn’t even like milk, they were willing to sacrifice and drink it for the good of everyone on the farm (p. 16, 22-23).…

There is no doubt that George Orwell's Animal Farm is one of the great literary works of the 20th century. He retells the 1917 Russian Revolution in the form of an allegory taking place on a farm run entirely by the animals. The animals quickly find their utopia corrupt by the greed and cunning of the pigs. Much like the actual revolution, the animals blame the ruling party for their poor lives, while the animal’s revolution is sparked by the idea that man is the root of all animal problems. Although the existence of man and its domination of animal species is a problem, there are other factors that come into play when considering the fall of Animal Farm, including natural disasters, weather, internal corruption and poor living conditions.…
