Animal Farm Summary

Summary of Animal Farm The novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell, is about the animals’ revolution in Manor Farm. It is Old Major, a twelve years old boar, who calls for a meeting with all the other animals in Manor Farm. At the meeting, Old Major tells the other animals about how useless humans are and teaches the other animals a revolutionary song, “Beasts of England.” Old Major dies and two pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, which are the cleverest animals, decides to revolt and drives their owner, Mr. Jones, who always drinks a lot, out of the Manor Farm and renames it Animal Farm. The animals adopts the Seven Commandments of Animalism and agrees on making the farmhouse a museum. Snowball teaches the other animals how to read and write from a old spelling book the Jones leaves behind, and the farm runs smoothly with a good supply of food. The pigs, somehow makes themselves leaders and saves special food items all for themselves. Napoleon takes puppies from the dogs and trains them secretly. Napoleon and Snowball disagrees on almost everything and both struggles to be the leader of Animal Farm. Snowball decides to build a windmill so it make work for the animals a lot easier and it provides electricity and Napoleon makes his dogs chase Snowball away and declares himself as the leader and the pigs now runs the whole farm. Napoleon uses Squealer, a pig who can turn everyone’s opinion about something into the opposite, to speak for him. Napoleon then claims credit for the windmill idea, but it is actually Snowball who thought of it. After a big and violent storm, the windmill gets destroyed and squealer convinces the other animals that Snowball did it, but it is actually because the walls are way too thin. Snowball is now always the reason for anything broken or losted. Napoleon begins to get rid and kills animals with his dogs and makes more privileges for themselves by rewriting the old history of the Seven Commandments of Animalism. Napoleon abolishes the song “Beasts of England” and replaces it with an anthem about himself. Squealer convinces the animals that their life now is still better than life with Jones. Mr. Frederick, a neighboring farmer, attacks the farm and destroys the windmill, but still, the animals win the battle. All the animals are either wounded or dead including Boxer, the hardest worker at all times and still continues to work with his injuries until he collapses while working on the windmill. Napoleon sends a van to take Boxer to the “Hospital,” saying that he’ll get better care there, but, Benjamin, a donkey, tells the others that he notices that the van brings Boxer to the knackers. Squealer tells and convinces them that the van was purchased by the hospital and the writing from the previous owner had not been repainted yet and tells them that Boxer dies with great care. Years passes, the pigs learns how to walk upright with their hind legs and starts wearing clothes. The Seven Commandments of Animalism becomes one phrase, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” Napoleon abolishes rules and traditions from the revolution and changes the name back to Manor Farm.
