COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM STUDY HANDOUT

This handout is prepared for you as a guide to assist you in studying for the final exam in this class. If you are knowledgeable in the following areas then you should be well prepared for the final exam. The questions that I have listed here are the most important ones that we have had during the semester. The concepts that are involved in these questions are what you will hopefully remember from this nutrition course long after your college career is over.

INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL: 1) You should be able to convert the percent nitrogen to percent protein. 2) Know how to convert from a dry matter basis to an as-fed basis. 3) Know how to convert from an as-fed basis or air-dry basis to a dry matter basis. 4) Know how to convert from ppm to % and from % to ppm. 5) Know the conversions from kilograms to pounds, pounds to grams, micrograms to grams, etc. 6) You should be able to list the six components of proximate analysis and be familiar with the nutrients that are found within each component. 7) Be able to explain the components of the Van Soest analysis. 8) Be able to calculate digestible nutrients from the data collected from a digestion trial. 9) Know how to calculate TDN. 10) Be able to draw the energy utilization scheme (i.e. Gross energy minus fecal energy = DE, DE minus ? = ? etc. 11) Know the difference between a basal (energy) feedstuff and a protein feedstuff. 12) Know the three general categories of hormones and be able to give an example of a hormone for each category. 13) Know where the different categories of hormones bind to their receptors. 14) Define essential nutrient and non-essential nutrient. 15) What are cofactors with regards to enzymatic systems? 16) What nutrients yield energy during metabolism?
