Animal welfare act 2006
Created in 2006, the animal welfare act was set up to ensure the protection of domesticated animals. What this meant was that anyone who didn't abide by these rules could be prosecuted and in some more serious cases, be taken to court. There was set in place five main welfare needs which are;
•Need for a suitable environment - what this means is that all animals that are being tended to, need to be situated in the correct environment with the correct temperature. This is a major requirement as if it wasn't followed, it may affect the welfare of the animal. E.g. if a cold blooded animal (snake) was put in a cold enclosure, this would affect their core temperature as they are poikilothermic (which means their body temp changes due to their environment). Although being poikilothermic is a good thing as they can adapt to many temperatures, if a snake is put in a environment over 36 degrees or under 4 degrees this can be deadly as it cannot adapt. …show more content…
What i mean by this, is for example; if a cat were to receive food that was meant for a dog, they would not be able to live from it as they are strict carnivores and need a lot of protein to survive which plants do not have. Not just that, if a cat were to try to live off of plants after a few days the cat would not be able to get the right nutrients that it needs and will first become malnourished and later die.
