As we have discussed in class, mise-en-scene is all about what is staged and arranged in front of the camera: actors, props, setting, color, movement, costume, make-up, and more. Identify *three* significant, specific elements of mise-en-scene from the scene in SHERLOCK JR. (see link above). Then answer the following questions: 1) For each element you mention, write a little about its meaning, emotional impact, and significance to the story. 2) Discuss whether or not the film, *as a whole* (not just this one scene) appears to be controlled or uncontrolled in its use of mise en scene. If the total film is a mix of controlled and uncontrolled elements, state specifically which elements are controlled, and which are uncontrolled. (approx 500 words / 2 paragraphs)…

You might be a fan of Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, or even Ben Affleck, but if you ask anyone, “Who was the original Batman?” they would most likely say, “Adam West.” The classic ABC series, Batman that ran from 1966 to 1968, was the first major exposure that many people had to the pteropine vigilante and his brightly garbed cohort, Robin. It had cheesy dialogue, used the cheapest of special effects, and is extremely dated. However, all of those things are part of what fans love about the show to this day. People still enjoy the 1960’s Batman for its goofy, campy, and “so bad it’s good” qualities. For these reasons, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment came together to create a new crime-fighting adventure for the Dynamic Duo for the modern age. On October 6, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders will premiere at New York Comic Con. The straight-to-video animated feature harkens back to the madcap antics that made the classic show so beloved. Also, the two stars from the original show - Adam West and Burt Ward – lend their voices to their iconic roles as Batman and Robin, respectively,…

Taking its origins from a poorly reviewed movie, the 1997 TV how by the same creator, Joss Whedon, brought to the screen a 16-year-old high school student whose destiny was to “stand against the vampires, the demons, the forces of darkness. She is the slayer” (Whedon, 1997). The introduction of Buffy The Vampire Slayer (BTVS), as a character, though not a new one, was revolutionary. Challenging the preconceptions of traditional horror, comedy, romance and teen movies, Whedon has created a character and a show that provide a postmodern, feminist hero for a generation of girls. With themes of monstrosity set up to represent human fears and the potential monstrosities of society itself, set up against a supernatural background, with the typically…

Unlike most teenage girls who love Romantic movies like Twilight and music by One Direction, I prefer watching movies that have connotative meanings (e.g. Shutter Island) and gaming is an essential condition for me to live. Some people call me a tomboy, but I hate this title with no reason. People who don’t know me well won’t even believe my personality and interests are like that. A bit similar to Bruce Wayne, he also hides his secrets behind his wealthy industrialist identity. The first time I was interested in The Dark Knight series was when the boredom of summer holiday annoyed me so much, I had to watch something to get me awake. It just so happens that The Dark Knight Rises was coming out and I thought…

    Law and Order

The fact of keeping law and order when it comes to terrorism is a very important, but very looked over issue. Terrorism has been around since the first attack in 1920. Most of the attacks on the United States has happened in New York. The most famous and well remembered is the attack on September 11, 2001, hijackers crashed 2 commercial jets into twin towers of World Trade Center; 2 more hijacked jets were crashed into the Pentagon and a field in rural Pa. Total dead and missing numbered 2,992, 2,749 in New York City, 184 at the Pentagon, 40 in Pa., and 19 hijackers. The Al Qaeda terrorist group was blamed and held responsible for the attack. Osama Bin Laden was the leader of this terrorist group and was ultimately punished for what he did. In 2011 Osama Bin Laden was hiding in a bunker, which was raided by an elite team of Navy Seals and shot down. This brave and heroic attack ultimately ended, or so we thought the war on terrorism. The fact of the matter is we will always have that fear of terrorists attacking huge events in the U.S. We can rest assured knowing that the FBI is risking their lives day and night protecting against another attack while we carry on with our busy, sometimes meaningless lives.…
