Artists believe that knowledge makes an artist more creative because the more knowledge someone has the more that person can think of to make their art better. Also having more knowledge allows you to create something different than everyone else. Some people might claim that true artists can create art spontaneously with little special knowledge or understanding. But Anna Deavere Smith states “ I believe that fundamental to becoming an artist is understanding the position of an artist,
rehearsing that position, and practicing that position,” Smith writes (123). The evidence states that the fundamentals to becoming a good artist is understanding the position of an artist.
Artists also believe that empathy is an important trait because artists use their feelings to create their art. Critics may claim just the opposite and say that art is entirely based on the artist’s own experiences and perspective. But as Deavere Smith states, “artists are students of the human condition,” and empathy is “important” and “potentially very productive” because it requires a very highly developed imagination” and intellect (124). The evidence states that empathy is important and requires a good amount of imagination and knowledge.
In conclusion artists need knowledge and empathy to create art.
