In Homelessness Can Require Complex Solution by Kevin Corinth, talks about how there are many reasons for someone to end up homelessness other than not having a permanent home. Some reasons he points out are that some suffer from mental healthy, abuse drugs, and do not have enough money to pay the rent. He stresses that we need to focus on their mental health, abusing drugs and rent, in order to truly help someone get out of being homeless. He believes that the Housing First philosophy makes us think that if someone has a permanent home then everything will be fine. This is correct to a certain extent because even if someone has a home, rent is very expensive or someone might not be able to maintain a job if they suffer from mental health.…
“A Quilt of a Country”, the argument presented by Anna Quindlen, she states that a quilt symbolizes America. For example, during Quindlen’s survey she found that most people think that America is a special place when she argues “One of the things that it stands for is this vexing notion that a great nation can consist entirely of refugees from other nations, that people of different, even warring religions and cultures can live, if not side by side side, then on either side of the country’s Chester Avenues”(Quindlen 5). This shows that people think that America is unique. Furthermore, the evidence implies that just like a quilt we are all different and we still manage to get along and work together. In addition, after Quindlen describes the…
In “A Quilt of a Country” by Anna Quindlen, the author illustrates the notion that American culture is a paradox of our two defining ideals, community and individuality. In the passage Quindlen explains how our nation was “founded on a conundrum”(3) as the beliefs of our nation are in constant conflict. Community and individuality are ideals of America, but it is difficult to have both. Several believe if you hold onto your culture and background it is challenging to act as a community. The author mentions how historians today bemoan the ascendency of apartheid, they believe that “clinging to ethnicity in background and custom has undermined the concept of unity”(3).…
In her article “ Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Kids.” Anna Quindlen discusses the issue about homeless families in the United States and the impact of homelessness on the children. Quindlen describes one situation where six people, a woman and five children, live together in a room the size of a master bedroom. The idea, Quindlen says, is that the ineffectiveness of the welfare system has negative impact on families, particularly, mothers and their offsprings . She poses the statement that each day the younger children go to daycare, while the others go to school. During that time their mother, Sharanda, looks for an apartment when she isn’t at her drug-treatment meetings. Quindlen suggests that ultimately shelters will become the…
In Scott Bransford article “Camping for Their Live”, Bransford writes about a newlywed couple Marie and Francisco Caro and many other homeless people in California’s Central Valley. The Caros didn’t have enough money to put a down payment on a home therefore they became homeless. Bransford uses a concerned tone when writing about the homeless in California. Bransford has some strengths and some weaknesses in his article. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of tent cities and the people who live in them. Bransford is biased towards helping homeless people. Bransford has a concerned and sympathic tone in his article about the homeless people in California’s Central Valley.…
Within the introduction, Hulchanski disassembles the word “homelessness”, and how homelessness is used by researchers, media, politicians, and services providers. He illustrates the invention of homelessness, who is highly susceptible to homelessness, and the detrimental impacts of homelessness. At the end of the introduction, Hulchanski plans for the the e-book to “take apart the word ‘homelessness’, and revealing the many social issues it conceals..and to develop appropriate responses”. Furthermore, working towards a goal that in “20 years, the term ‘homelessness’ will be obsolete”.…
You may not have perceived that this life, the way we have been brought up has condition us to be unseeing to some obvious situations in this world. Visibly picture in your head what it means to be homeless at that same time think why are those people homeless? During this recent article, Michael Sullivan wrote, I was homeless; ‘the look’ judged me worthless, to share with all readers in different communities. Sullivan has an overwhelming sense of personal experiences shared which gives a great insight to draw his readers to an emotional side as well as a connection of trust with him. While using examples of pathos and ethos his readers are likely to feel a connection to his article and see things differently as he did during his own life experience.…
Anna Quindlen is an author of novels and children’s books and she won a Pulitzer Prize for her column in the New York Times entitled “Public and Private.” She wrote an essay “Doing Nothing is Something.” In her essay, she describes how children are so overscheduled that they do not have time for down time. While I agree with Quindlen that the down time she grew up with no longer happens, it is important to understand that today down time can be achieved in other ways that are up to the individual.…
Two trends are largely responsible for the rise in homelessness over the past 20-25 years: a growing shortage of affordable rental housing and a simultaneous increase in poverty. Persons living in poverty are most at risk of becoming homeless, and demographic groups who are more likely to experience poverty are also more likely to experience homelessness (National Coalition for the Homelessness, 2009). The lack of affordable housing is the primary cause of homelessness in the United States. Due to the combination of stagnant incomes and rising housing costs, affordable housing has become unobtainable for an increasing portion of the population, and as the disparity between wages and housing costs increases, more individuals are at risk of homelessness. In the current national market, even a one- bedroom…
“Homelessness is the condition of people without a permanent dwelling, such as a house or apartment.” In the United States over 500,000 people, almost a quarter of them children, were homeless this year. That’s over half a million-people living on streets, cars and or homeless shelters. 49,933 people, veterans to be specific, were identified across the United States as homeless, 51% of these homeless veterans have disabilities, 50% have serious mental issues, 70% have a substance abuse problem. Nearly one-quarter, 23% of the homeless are children under the age of 18. 10% are between the ages of 18 and 24, and 66% are over the age of 25.…
With the recent affordable-housing crisis that has been transpiring in Canada, homelessness has become a highly significant social issue (Gaetz, Gulliver, & Richter, 2014, p. 5). To address the issue of homelessness, the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness (Secretariat) released the document “A Plan for Alberta: Ending Homelessness in 10 Years” in 2008. The philosophy behind this plan is Housing First which was popularized in New York City in the 1990’s (Calgary Homeless Foundation, 2014, p. 1).…
Imagine spending each night out on the streets and waking up to a blathering commotion on rough, lumpy concrete. Your thoughts leading you to your own theory of as the only chances of survival are begging and relying on people for food or change and searching for anything edible in the nearest garbage cans. We should all work together to end homelessness everywhere throughout the world. This essay will discuss…
Homelessness is a growing social injustice in the United States. The degradation that these people face every day is terrifying. It is a crisis that we too often ignore, hoping it will restore itself. That assumption delivers a widespread lack of understanding about the facts that lead to homelessness. Homelessness exists as a problem that we should acknowledge and treat.…
“Home is where the heart is,” Anne uses this quote to emphasize the importance of having a home and what having a home truly means. This quote speaks to me because my home is very important to me. It is the single place that I know I can always go back to, the place that is my definition of consistency. Unfortunately, not everyone gets to experience that feeling of having a singular point of consistency in their lives. These people are people, not the epidemic that we call the “homeless.”…
