We go through our lives with dreams, hopes, and expectations. Our lives are all a fairy tale, until the moment tragedy strikes. When reading the poem “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allen Poe, many of us can relate to this type of agonizing tragedy and pain. The passion and pain Edgar Allen Poe put’s into writing this poem is very obvious, but have we looked at the true meaning and purpose of this poem? The poem “Annabel Lee” has deep and intense meaning. It was written with the purpose of giving a meaning to the death of the one he loved, he is using her death to tell us a message of hope for a fairy tale, extraordinary love, so strong it can even outlast death.
Annabel Lee is a poem written about Edgar Allen Poe’s young wife; she got ill and passed away at a very young age. He set’s this poem up beginning as a fantasy or fairy tale to show the extent of how deeply in love they were with each other. It causes him more devastation having her on his mind all the time, having to think about her death and the separation death has caused between them. Because of that, he ends on lying down next to her at night. I believe he is referring to laying his body in a grave next to his brides, but not in a literal sense. By laying his body next to hers he is exemplifying giving up his life for her, instead of taking his own life he is dedicating to live his life, in a way she would be proud of and to live his life in a way which would be honoring to
