Anne Bradstreet's In Reference to Her Children: An Analysis
Part 1 - Short Answer
1)In her poem "In Reference to Her Children" I instantly noticed her great deal of emotion of concern for her children. She states "No cost, No Labour did I spare" that shows that she is willing to give and do whatever it takes to take care of her children.
2)Anne Bradstreet endured many hardships through out her life, two of which I feel greatly influenced her position as a mother.t A) After Anne Bradstreet had arrived in America with her husband and other colonist she witnessed a great number of casualties as the colonist all had to fight for survival due to lack of food and poor living arrangements. - I feel this experience instilled the importance of ensuring that her children never be put in this type of situation. B) The home of Anne Bradstreet and her family burnt down, leaving them homeless for a little while. - I feel this experience, made her realize that danger is everywhere and is inevitable, and that's why I believe she pushed so much to ensure her children were well prepared for the real world and instilled the fear that her children once on their own will endure their own countless experiences of hardships.
3) I could compare Anne Bradstreet to a teacher/instructor in the sense that she is educated and wants nothing more than the best for her children/students and in the sense that she feels education/knowledge is power.
4) According to the poem: A) Anne Bradstreet has 8 children B) Anne Bradstreet has 4 girls C) Anne Bradstreet has 4 boys D) Her first child learned to sing and left the nest, but occasionally comes back to the nest to sing with the family. E) Her last 3 children are still with her.
5) She is giving her children the comfort of knowing that their mother has done everything to ensure that they were raised to the best that they could, and that they were strong.
