Anne Elliot is the twenty seven year-old leading female character and complex star of Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion. Her unforgiving wit and poise define her as a fearless and intelligent young woman. After experiencing all that heartbreak entails, Anne finds her way back to love and disregards societal pressures and expectations. Anne Elliot’s unique personality and charm set her apart as a revolutionary, brave heroine in Persuasion. Anne is the middle daughter of her two other sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. Anne’s younger sister, Mary seems to have an ideal life, as she marries off quite young. Throughout the history of witchcraft it has been hard to establish if any of these accusations on ‘witches ' were actually true due to lack of records and proof, although it now seems certain that the vast majority of women incited were innocent. In the book "The Bewitching of Anne Gunter" we can see how these allegations can be completely fabricated for personal gain and revenge.…

    | Anne says this in frustration after Mrs. Van Daan yells at her for spilling milk on her coat. This expresses another Anne because it suggests that Anne sees herself changing, that she envisions a different self. I feel that Anne says this because to her, everybody in the Annex shows more favoritism to Margot then her, especially her mother. On the outside it seems Anne can’t always control her temper, as she strives to be more like Margot, who is patient and calm. On the inside, she is jealous of Margot, wanting to have more of an attitude like hers, and convey a better personality to others, contrary to what she’s done. Also Anne is younger, so it is understandable that she'd look up to an older sibling. I can relate to this because many times in our family, I feel as if my parents favor my older sibling over me. I have the same feelings as expressed in this quote, as it is hard to be more mature than somebody older. This quotation suggests change in Anne, as she herself wants to change, and be more socially civil rather than her normal self. Though it conveys negativity on Anne’s character, as she is losing her temper, it also shows maturity, as she is maturing. This quote shows that she is maturing because she now realizes her impact on others, and wants to be more like Margot, who is quite a role model to her. Some questions that occurred were: * Will Anne keep maturing as she is already? *…

The ideas conveyed by Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice and Fay Weldon in Letters to Alice on first reading Jane Austen conflict with and challenge the values of their contemporary society and serve to offer moral perspectives opposing to those of their respective societies. Connections can be made between the role of the writer and their purpose in both texts and, particularly through consideration of Weldon’s contextualisation and form, the reader’s perspective of both texts is reshaped and enhanced. Furthermore, Weldon perceives and forges a connection with Austen to illustrate both authors’ didactic purposes and allows the reader to re-evaluate the form and purpose of Pride and Prejudice against Weldon’s feminist and postmodern context.…

Most would think that the heroine of a novel is strong and courageous. However, in the novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, this is not the case. The heroine in this novel is more like a damsel in distress, someone who is confused and entangled in many life problems. Eleanor Tilney’s characteristics of vulnerability and dependence classify her as the real gothic heroine. A heroine illustrated as powerless seems to be contradicting, but is used on purpose. Austen uses satire to portray Eleanor Tilney with the title of a heroine, but is actually weak and dependent to further satirize what it means to be a hero.…

By comparing and contrasting the matriarchs of Persuasion and A Room With A View, one can know how Jane Austen’s and E. M. Forster’s societies’ viewed marriage. The matriarch from Persuasion was Lady Russell, who was the Elliot’s Godmother. As the Godmother, Lady Russell had a huge influence on the whole family, especially Anne Elliot. Early on in the novel, Anne Elliot fell in love with a man named Captain Wentworth who at the time being was not of much importance. Since he was as Lady Russell puts it “Captain Wentworth had no fortune,” (Austen, p. 27), Lady Russell thought it was foolish for Anne to marry him; so she “persuaded [Anne] to believe the engagement a wrong thing— indiscreet, improper, hardly capable of success, and not deserving it” (Austen, p. 27). Conveying only one thing to the…

Within Jane Austen’s book Persuasion, she addresses issues of wealth, class, looks, and love through her use of humor. Love plays a major role in this story because to Sir Elliot, the father of Anne Elliot, a major character, looks and one’s fortune and one’s position in society. Anne Elliot wanted to marry Captain Wentworth, however since he was poor at the time, Sir Elliot looked does upon him and did not want Anne to marry him: Anne turned down his offer of a hand in marriage. Later in the story, Captain Wentworth reappears; this time he is rich. All of a sudden women are all over him and Sir Elliot thinks highly of him. When Anne and was reacquainted with Captain Wentworth, she remembered the feelings she had for him and how they were still existent. She wanted to pursue these strong emotions because her family also admired her and therefore she would have approval to take his hand in marriage. But she was hesitant and unsure if Captain Wentworth shared these mutual feelings with her. As a result, Jane Austen wrote two different conclusions that are different based on the writing style. These conclusions differ in the sense that the conclusion that Austen has Wentworth writing Anne a letter confessing his love in the book, yet in the alternate conclusion Wentworth and Anne confess their love for each other in person.…

Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, Anne Shirley and Mary Lennox with their adopters, siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, and Archibald Craven, keep their own secrets whether for personal or family reasons. Furthermore, their new homes, Green Gables for Anne and Misselthwaite Manor for Mary, influence the girls’ maturation processes because their unfamiliarity with these new environments encourages them to keep secret their personal histories. While they are both secretive about their pasts, Anne uses her past as motivation to take responsibility for her family’s future whereas Mary’s pursuit of the secrets of the garden turns a selfish girl into a kinder young girl. Moreover, Matthew, Marilla and Mr. Craven share a similarity in that their secrets are all about their hidden love and emotions, while the difference is that Mr. Craven recognizes his love for Colin with Mary’s help after Mary causes the rebirth of the garden. In Persuasion, Jane Austen explores Anne’s love life in many ways. The novel is set in the 18th century where there are many laws against marriage. For instance, women were expected to marry by a certain age. If women do not marry by a certain age, they are considered an “old maid”. Also, if women were widowed with no children they are considered “old maid”. Women were expected to marry their social rank. Marrying wealthy was necessary because after coming of age, their husbands were supposed to take care of them. Women in that time period had no rights and were not acknowledged. In laws, they were called “wives” not by name. Throughout Persuasion, there are many romances that are out of the laws. Anne is a beautiful woman that is in love with Captain Wentsworth. There were a proposal between Wentsworth and Anne, but Wentsworth did not have the same social rank or wealth as Anne did. Lady Russell talked Anne out of the engagement by saying it is in her best interest to end the love affair. Anne, then, broke Wentsworth’s proposal. There were no consolation after the ending of the engagement. Wentsworth went into the navy, while Anne lived her life. Anne went through many love affairs throughout the seven years, which all ended by the cause of Anne. Anne still loved Wentsworth profoundly. Some six years later, Anne’s family goes into a slight debt and rents out their mansion to a couple named the Crofts. Mrs. Croft’s brother just happens to be a familiar person of Anne’s interest. It is Captain Wentsworth! Anne stays with her sister Mary because she did not want to move to Bathe right away. The Crofts invite Anne, Mary, and Charles over to visit the mansion, when Wentsworth makes a visit to see his sister. No one has any clue about Anne or Wentsworth, which gives the novel a great twist. Of course Wentsworth has not forgiven Anne after all those…
