With all the negative things to happen Annemarie did not let down her younger sister Kirsti. When Kirsti Thinks of the night that they went to the Tivoli Gardens She mentions the word fireworks, Annemarie realized what she was talking about and quickly knew that they were the Danish ships being destroyed rather than being actual fireworks. The Bold Annemarie decides to not tell Kirsti the truth. Not telling the truth to keep Kirsti happy because she is younger is the same as Mother not telling Annemarie the truth because she is younger to keep her happy also.
As Annemarie begins to adapt towards the end, she showcased qualities of a more mature Annemarie. She began to see past the lies and take charge of the situation at hand. When the German soldiers ordered Annemarie to stop moving on the way to the docks, she acted like a silly little girl. The Germans overlooked her and let her go past. Annemarie was revealed to another revelation that Peter Neilson was Resistance Fighter. Annemarie did not react like a child and simply brushed it away. From these two events, Annemarie had gained confidence that she was not a little girl anymore.
