Imagery played an important part of Jonathan Edwards’s sermon. Imagery is a rhetorical that’s help the author draw a picture for the reader. This also helps to give the reader a better understanding. One example of imagery that Edwards use is ‘‘…would have no more influence to uphold you and keep you out of hell. Than a spider web would have to stop a fallen rock.’’ This sends a message to the reader that nothing can stop you from going to hell. This also put the fear of going to hell in people. This…

Chapter six discussed how preaching provides the brain energy. Cox argued, “Preaching needs to be perceived, understood, practiced and appreciated for being holy energy” (80). This energy, Cox suggested, is the Holy Spirit. He gave several examples of preaching and its ability to move the brain to action. Concluding, “Preaching is dynamic and moves an audience”…

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston starts off with a concept of dreams constructed as ships sailing on the horizon, few drifting away or coming to shore, and others forever sailing, a remembrance to signify the life of men. While this passage only lasts for one short paragraph, it creates a core idea for the book; the aspirations, dreams, and wishes of men are always inhabiting their thoughts, sailing on the horizon where they remain until they perish from Time bearing its unrelenting force upon them.…

Amy Miller, in The Church of the Rowing Machine, demonstrates how human’s imagination enlarges one’s perception of a dream. As long as a dream guides a human being through the life, as long as this dream prevails and one believes that “[one’s] crewmates…are illusion and distance is illusion” that cannot stop him on his way, this human being will come close to catching or even will catch the dream (Miller 45). The reality of a dream does not truly matter since its driving force is the only thing that counts and leads a human being to the new…

As soon as I walked into the church, I could feel how tense the room already was. My two children grabbed my hands, fearfully, as we walked into the room filled with emotion. We searched for a place to sit. Pastor Edwards had already started his sermon, so we sat in the back pews. He immediately began pointing out our iniquities and used very vivid metaphors that clearly shown God’s wrath towards the congregation. When Pastor Edwards yelled, “You have offended Him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince; and yet it is nothing but His hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment,” it was as if he aimed this directly at me (48).…

I found the connection between dreams and ancient religions to be the most intriguing part of the reading. It certainly does make sense that dreams might have inspired animism and other forms of religion and the way that the ancients interacted with dreams seems to share many similarities with how we interact with dreams. Similar to what happens in a Seneca Dream Guessing ceremony, people today analyze their dreams and interpret them in various ways, although it is not always in a spiritual light and there are many more resources now besides for friends, family, and other tribe members to offer ideas of what dreams might mean. Additionally, just as people in ancient times might have interpreted their dreams according to their religion, considering dreams to be visions or proof of possession by some higher power, people today may do the exact same thing. Considering how odd dreams can seem and how we still don’t seem to have much knowledge on their causes today, this comes across as unsurprising.…

The significance and meaning of the Dreaming is central to Aboriginal spirituality. Each Aboriginal group is connected with the Dreaming and is aware its unique identity is derived from it. Aboriginals today, continue to emerge from the Dreaming, yet they are still intensely connected with it till this day. The Dreaming includes all aspects of Aboriginal life, and because of the vast scale it encompasses, it is a challenging task to link it entirely to a specific typology in the study of religion.…
