“The
Montague-Capulet hatred might seem overwrought enough to have its parodistic aspects, but it destroys two immensely valuable, very young lovers, Juliet of the Capulets and Romeo of the Montagues…”(Bloom). I think that if there was no hatred between the Montagues and the Capulets, then Romeo and Juliet would maybe have escaped the tragedy. Others would argue that Juliet’s plan was flawed and that is why the two lovers were destroyed. I disagree because if there was no hatred between the families in the first place then Juliet would not have had to come up with a plan to be with Romeo.
I also agree with Harold Bloom that Mercutio becomes a forgotten character after he dies. “What place has Mercutio in the play once it becomes dominated by Juliet’s magnificent avowal of her love’s infinitude”(Bloom). Juliet says these lines in Romeo and Juliet, “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite” (II.ii.133-135). This shows Juliet’s love for Romeo. A counter-argument to Mercutio becoming a forgotten character would be that Shakespeare invented Mercutio as a character and that makes him a big deal. I do not agree with that because after Mercutio is killed by Tybalt, he becomes irrelevant in the story of two lovers.
