Values and Ethics have many similarities in that they are a learned doctrine a person or group holds to be true, whether they follow it or not. Values can be the ethical ideals of a company as well.
Values, in a sociological sense are “the ideals, customs, institutions, etc., of a society toward which the people of the group have an affective regard. These values may be positive, as cleanliness, freedom, or education, or negative, as cruelty, crime, or blasphemy.”
Ethics are “a system of moral principles: the ethics of a culture.” They are “the rules of Sconduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group. Culture, etc.: medical ethics; Christian ethics.” >Dictionary.com, LLC.. (2011). Dictionary.com. Retrieved from http://dictionary.com
Career success in the business world is directly related to personal and professional values and ethics for many reasons. Most large companies today have a “code of conduct” that relates to inter office politics and gives a base doctrine on how customers are to be treated at all times. The importance of this is illustrated on the web site, “ethics.org” where there is a whole sub site dedicated to “Why have a Code of Conduct?” If everyone tries to act ethically in their relationships with co-workers and consumers the same then things go a lot smoother. >Driscoll, Dawn-Marie and W.
