There has always been a discussion between professionals whether bulimia is worse than anorexia or vice versa. They both are mental disorders in which people have the need to starve themselves. In other words, they feel that there is only a way to be thin: by removing all the food eaten through vomiting or in anorexia’s case they don’t eat anything and still provoke vomiting (Fuentes, 2004). These are two types of eating disorders that are present mainly in teens. Although many people say that these eating disorders are the same, results have shown that they are different as well from one another.
The first similarity that these two eating disorders have is the age that they affect, teens and women in their 20’s. This age is mainly affected because teenagers put so much into their appearance. They basically don’t like the way they look and they feel they have to do something immediately to change it. The second cause is that some teens are not very satisfied with their body changing through age. Especially girls, notice that their body is making changes and it’s growing and they just don’t like the way that is transforming, so they begin to change it back the way it was before. Another cause stated from a well-known professor on Minnesota’s University is that: “Nowadays celebrities are a bad example for teens because they show them to think that they should be perfectionists” (Prof. McCoy 88). These people see themselves in the mirror everyday and if they don’t like what they see, they create one of these disorders and try to make their body perfect.
Second similarity is the health problem. Bulimia damages the digestive system and can affect electrolyte balance (Dr. Mathew 98-103). Bulimic people have a constant fatigue and also irregular heart rate. Whereas anorexia besides these problems stated, causes the body to slow down in order to preserve energy.
