When a song is as heavily covered as Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That A Shame” from his album Rock and Rollin with Fats Domino you know that there is something special about it. With recording artists such as Pat Boone, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and even the 1970s rock group, Cheap Trick recording the song many people know at least one version. However the original version has a special something about it that helps it stand out from the many covers. The song has an enticing hook, interesting historical context, and is an earworm that was with me for several days after I first heard the song.…
Singing in the Rain is an upbeat musical tying into a sweet love story. The movie begins with the main character, movie star Don Lockwood, escaping from a wild mob of fans and jumping into a random car where he meets Kathy Selden. Falling in love with independent Kathy Selden, Don Lockwood faces the problem of finding her again after the escapade of jumping into her car. Even when Don finds Kathy again, Lina Lamont, the glamorous actress alongside Don Lockwood in all the movies, becomes a problem. Lina observes Don’s love for Kathy, and wanting Don for herself tries in every possible way to tear the two apart. When ‘talking pictures’ replace silent films, everything grows more complicating as the movie studio struggles with what to do with…
I enjoy listening to this song anyways as it is in my native language and one of my top childhood songs. The song is about a couple who is in love with each other but when the guy has to leave for the US, they broke up. He later returns and the love is still there. This is a very cute story and I love singing the lyrics that describes his feelings for her as he was away. If I broke up and get back together with my boyfriend, I would want this to be our scenario, that we broke up and got back together because of distance or circumstances, not because we wanted this. I also love how there are english lyrics sung with deep emotion in the song: “I will be back for you.” The music video for the song is also very heartwarming and brings a smile to my face whenever I think of it. If I got back together with my ex, I could listen to this song to remind me of my feelings for him. This song is a great song that evokes strong emotions from me and makes me think about love and how strong it is to overcome lots.…
By enhancing my listening skills, I can become more OPEN-MINDED by broadening my horizons. If I am more willing to listen, then I have more of a chance to learn. and grow.…
The breakfast club has one of the most unique and memorable soundtracks of all time. Something that made the movie gave it such a memorable track and the movies “theme song”, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by the band Simple minds. Something that the movie did that not none to many movies had done at that point. They used this song twice, once at the beginning at once at the end. The two times this song is played in this movie, each function is shown. It shows genre because the movie was release in 1985 and this is around the time new wave music (the song’s genre) became popular. It sets the mood both at the beginning and at the end of the movie. It sets mood at the beginning because of the tempo and rhythm makes…
Miguel Primentel, a R&B and soul artist, was a breath of fresh air to the R&B game in the 2010-2013 time frame. The Ballad “Candles in the Sun” was a simple, yet powerful song with a very nice message. This song was released on his second studio album Kaleidoscope Dream on September 25, 2012. Candles in the sun didn’t chart because wasn’t a single, but the album was number three on the Billboard 200 (Wikipedia 2016). “I wanted to create a song and visual that addressed my everyday concerns of life” (Miguel 2013) The song was very repetitive but had an amazing message. The song was to make you think and call to attention to the problems of the world. During 2011 and 2012 there were conflicts in the middle east, many countries had political…
“Talking shit about a pretty sunset,” is a song that portrays an overall apathetic outlook on life. The listener can clearly hear the discontent expressed in the words sung and the execution in the music. Thoughts of suicide, phobia of commitment, lack and gain of motivation, fixation and illusions of a better life are all present. Through the complex breaks and climax of the song, tells an emotional story of revelation, realization and self-actualization.…
In Smooth Jazz, the piano, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, bass guitar and percussion instruments are played. You will usually be able to hear the saxophone and trumpet the most. You can also hear the guitar and piano. If you pay close attention, you can hear some percussion instruments. A percussion instrument is an instrument you play by either shaking it, like maracas, or by hitting it with a beater like the drums.…
Hip Hop is the great American paradox. A culture encompasses art, politics, and all things intertwined with urban life, and gives a platform for the populace of American poverty. Hip Hop is a blurred culture in the sense that it distinctly represents a social and ethnic class, and also indistinctly perceives a negative stereotype of these classes to a detached or unconcerned bystanders, that brandish Hip Hop as a dysphemism; an expression so substituted and contemptuous of themselves and to the greater society. The music video I will be discussing is from a 1990’s Hip Hop group named De La Soul, and the song is titled “Stakes is High”. The music video for this song illustrates Elijah Anderson analysis of inner city deism and examines the micro and macro circumstances that entail the philosophy of “The Code of the Streets”. This code that Anderson describes are the unwritten laws of urban neighborhoods—the norms that reflect the extensive social and economic complexities of many of the nation's inner-city urban inhabitants.…
The song that I chose to analyze is “Changes” by Tupac Shakur. The late Tupac Shakur was an African American rapper who was shot dead years ago. His powerful lyrics have impacted the rap industry to this day, because he spoke the truth. His lyrics directly related to his everyday struggles, and how being a successful African American is not an easy task to achieve. Rap usually talks about events of everyday life, and the song “Changes” talks about racial profiling, poverty, and how racism affects the everyday life of African American people. Note that this song came out in about 1996 where things were different, however the lyrics of this song still ring in the ears of people who are affected by the evil of racism.…
In my opinion, the conflicts leading up the American Revolution were one many of the significant issues. The conflicts came out to me as significant because it played as one of the most important roles in our history. Though, there are various types of conflict that lead the North American colonies on the fight for their independence, there were only a few that stuck out to me the most. The Boston Tea party, the Intolerable Acts, and the First Continental Congress, the were major factors in the American Revolution. Without those conflicts, America’s fate as a country would be a little different.…
A new way of playing the piano called the Harlem Stride Style, was created during the Harlem Renaissance, and was a major line between the poor blacks and the higher blacks. The traditional jazz band was mostly brass instruments and was considered a symbol of the south, and the piano was considered an instrument of the wealthy. Innovation and liveliness were important characteristics of performers in the beginning of jazz. Jazz musicians at the time were very talented and competitive, and were considered to have started the foundation for future black…
In The Song of Songs, the Shulamite and her lover are everything but what society conforms to. In their Hebrew society there are rules and restrictions pertaining to sexual relations and who is allowed to marry who. These rules are stated in the book of Deuteronomy, and if the citizens do not abide by the laws written in the book, the punishments were harsh and brutal. However, the Shulamite and her lover seemed to be living in their own world where they could not care less about what society thought of them. In this poem, The Shulamite and her lover break many laws, and in most cases, desire seems to be considered a higher law to them than anything written in Deuteronomy.…
Lieder ohne Worte (Song without Words) is written by the Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It is a collection of forty-eight short lyrical piano pieces of markedly song-like character that he wrote at various periods of his life between 1809 and 1847. They are well suited to the study of musical form because of their artistic value. Op. 19b, No. 1 Andante con moto in E major was written in 1830 and is the first in the collection. The piece is in the key of E major and modulates from E to B to G major.…
Energy plays an important role in human activities.
