In another gory accident involving heavy equipment, the Star reported on Sunday, 2nd June 2013 – “Westport forklift operator crushed to death by container.” The incident occurred at the Westport Industrial area when the 10-tonne machine toppled forward and its load crushed the forklift roof and the driver, who was a foreign worker.
This was another workplace accident in the Klang Valley (50 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur) within the last two weeks. Initial reports indicated that it occurred within Westport but the Management from the Port clarified that the accident occurred at the Depot where empty containers were stored. In the shipping and logistic industry such operations are normally outsourced.
SR Monitor expressed its concerns on the lapse in health and safety rules at the workplace and it may not be the fault of the port operator or the container owner which can be an International Shipping Line but the stakeholders in the whole supply chain cannot be absolved from the blame for this lapse in supervision and monitoring of heavy equipment operations.
There appears to be a deluge of foreign workers engaged within the port and port vicinity which at one time was disallowed due to security concerns apart from the exposure to the dangers from the movement of heavy mechanized equipment. Questions will be asked whether these foreign workers were adequately trained and aware of the safety features of the equipment and the work environment!
