According to a very respected lady, by the name of Eleanor Roosevelt, she once stated that "In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility." Simply put yet, so true that responsibility comes from the shaping of ourselves through the many choices we make throughout our lives. Having a personal acceptance of responsibility involves a variety of different skills; such as management of time, money, and a good understanding of personal health. Time is probably of the most importance when it comes to personal responsibility. Time is something that is involved in every aspect of our lives from beginning to end. Unmanaged time of any sort leads to a great number of failures. Time is the one thing in life that when lost you can never get it back. The academics used for furthering our education feeds on time. We must allow appropriate time for reviewing and studying quizzes and tests, as well as allowing time for working on homework so we can put forth our best work. Academic work is not all that students must perform while attending school for higher education. In a study as performed by Valerie Holmes, she found that "in total of 58 per cent of students who worked did so to either cover or contribute to basic costs of living." (Holmes, 2008) Students today have to work in order to get through college. Working gives the student a good foundation for future references while at the same time, also working requires us to be able to balance work and academics. Many college students today are not fresh out of high school; we are mature, we have families, and we want to better ourselves by attaining a higher education. Holmes said it best when she said, "Students can no longer be considered as full-time students, but rather as having dual roles, that of students and employees." (Holmes, 2008) We have all heard that money makes the world go around and money talks. Money may talk or make the world go around, but it is worth very little without personal responsibility. Money does not discriminate in age, mismanaged money results in catastrophe, for the young and old. The decision to get a higher education is a very costly decision and without personal responsibility in money management it can only lead to a terrible debt that will follow us around for the rest of our lives until it is paid off. Based on a study performed by Peng, Batholomae, and Fox in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues, students who have taken a finance course at the college they are attending seemed to have a better understanding of a higher level of financial balance. As a student, there are several ways to save money; student discounts, coupons, buy used items, carrying just enough cash to purchase needs and not wants and renting class books. Keeping track of all expenses will show where the weaknesses in spending are. Our health is imperative at any time throughout our lives. As students, we want to have good academic progress, and in order to accomplish this, we will have to have good health habits. Such healthy habits may consist of; getting plenty of rest, at least eight hours of sleep every night, 30 minutes or more of exercise every day or at least three days a week and eating properly by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. A healthy body promises a healthy mind as well. Much of the time health begins in elementary school and leads into high school. In School is when we are taught to use the food pyramid that the right foods feed our brain, that exercise energizes the brain, and plenty of sleep revs us up for the next day of school or work. In The International Journal of Educational Management, P. A. Smith states that, "School climate has been associated with the academic achievement of students." (Smith, 2002) If the school teaches not only these health habits, but also practices what they teach then we will see the proof, that being healthy does make a great and wonderful difference in our academics, and mastering new accomplishments each and every day. As we can see through these many examples, the effects of possessing personal responsibilities are in numerous. Theodore Roosevelt said it best, “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn 't sit for a month.” Therefore, we now know that personal responsibility consists of many elements in life including; managing time, saving money as well as being healthy.
