In the beginning of Anthem, Equality 7-2521 commits a sin, a sin that everyone knows they are not to perform. Equality 7-2521 broke both rules with a sentence consisting of seven words…
This is the theme because all through the story, it seems like they were trying to make everyone look the same and be ugly, but that did not help it just focuses people to change and they didn't have any say in it. The theme for Anthem would be individualism because they didn't want anyone to figure out about being independent and self-reliant so they made everyone use 3rd person point of views. But when Equality 7-2521 found out about "I" statements he stop caring about everyone else and started to live for himself. The theme of Harrison Bergeron and anthem are alike because in both stories they have leaders that are making them not be their self. The main character in Harrison Bergeron is Harrison. Harrison was 7 feet tall, extremely strong , extremely handsome also was…
In the book “Anthem” everyone is forced against their will in being equally alike; it is against the rules to be different. If you were to disobey the rules or refer to yourself as “I” you will be severely punished or put to death depending on the type of situation. For example, there was a man with gold hair and blue eyes that had his tongue torn out of his mouth and was being burned alive for speaking the unspeakable word. The unspeakable word is the word that equality 7-2521 is intrigued in discovering even though it is a sin. Prometheus (Equality 7-2521) came to understand that he is unique and he can assist his society. His society regards the “best in him” as sinful because his society does not like changes. Prometheus is a man who is…
Throughout Greek mythology Prometheus is known as the fire bearing Titan who rebelled against Zeus and saved the world from his curse of a heatless and lightless punishment. Like wise, Equality in Anthem also rebels against his government in response to seeing the corruption within it. These similarities show how their lives exemplify the ideal of individualism. Furthermore, Gaea, the goddess of earth, is comparable with The Golden One from Anthem; both would be seen as the beginning of a new race. In particular, Prometheus and Equality’s trails and experiences correlate to each other and elicit the motives behind their audacious actions. Ultimately, Ayn Rand changes the names of her characters to Prometheus and Gaea as their lives parallel the lives of Equality and the Golden One both with similar trials and sacrifices for the sake of mankind. Prometheus and Equality’s rebellion are similar. They both passionately desire prosperity for their human race and are willing to rebel against a higher power to achieve it. Initially, their rebellion against a higher power is quite similar: “The rebel Prometheus, who had taken such a personal risk for mankind, now was faced with getting the fire back down to earth.” (Pontikis; Prometheus; Mythology’s Original Rebel). Furthermore, Equality rebelled against the higher power that threatened his humanity: “ ‘You fools!’ we cried. ‘You fools!’ ‘You thrice-damned fools!’” (Rand, page 75). Here Equality calls the highest power, the Council of the Scholars, “Thrice-damned fools” because they reject his offering to humanity. Later, Equality vows to protect his chosen brothers and start a new rebellion race that would be based off individualism and loyalty. He wanted to create a new race of humans, a race that would be superior to the people that he grew up with. He would add things that would make them like gods relative to that of the past humans, such as individualism and…
Perhaps the most well known story of the Holy Bible is that of the creation story. In this story, God creates the earth in six days and rests on the seventh, after creating light, dark, oceans, and animals of all types. When he feels that there should be creatures other than animals, he creates man, in His image. He names this man Adam, and then creates a counterpart for his new creation, Eve. Adam and Eve lived together in harmony with God and all the other animals in the Garden of Eden, a paradise where evil did not exist, and their only rule was to not eat from the tree of Knowledge. However, Adam and Eve, under the temptation of the serpent, showed greed, and wanted to be more like God, so they ate the fruit, in order to become like God. When compared in depth, the protagonist of the creation story, Adam, and the street sweeper, Equality 7-2521, of Ayn Rand’s Anthem are condemned men, whose stories are very similar, save one key difference.…
Anthem is a story about a 21-year old boy named Equality 7-2521 and a 17-year old girl named Liberty 5-3000 who are both different from the others in their secluded society which lacks individualism and self-interest. The movie, Divergent, also follows a similar story line. Divergent is a story about an 18 year-old boy named Tobias Eaton and a 16-year old girl named Beatrice Prior who are both different from the others in their society which lacks individualism and self-interest. Anthem and Divergent are similar in that the main characters have one set lifestyle, they change their name, and they develop similar relationships between each other.…
In a society of many, how can one live to their true potential? One cannot go about finding themselves when criticized and ridiculed for acting and thinking different. This is the idea that Ayn Rand bases her novella, Anthem, upon. Against the society’s laws and beliefs, Ayn’s character, Prometheus, learns “why the best in me had been my sins and my transgressions; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins” (98). He finds that his sins enable him to bring back such a power to the society, even if others are against it. He can use his sins to become better. One cannot stand alone in this obscure society, unless they gain such knowledge that Prometheus has obtained from sinning. Although greatness is obtained by his sins, Prometheus is threatening the beliefs of the one and only society he knows. Committing such sins and transgressions that are needed to gain his knowledge and power forces Prometheus to break the laws of his society. The society views Prometheus as not only sinful but evil, being smarter and taller (18).…

Owen’s purpose in writing Anthem for a Doomed Youth is to reveal the cruel reality of war which was always hidden from the public in World War One and to show anger to the people who sent him to the trenches. He says in his preface "All a poet can do today is warn....” this shows he aims to prevent war from happening in later generations.…
In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, the last two chapters play an important part in bringing together the text as a whole. The narrator transitions from third to first person narration after his escape from the dismal “utopian” society. Prometheus, the aforementioned narrator, recounts the history of man and his struggle to overcome oppression by greater forces and authoritarian figures. The author chooses to repeat symbols and words of individuality and the benefits of singular work. Ayn Rand uses her novella Anthem to promote the importance of individuality in all aspects of life.…
What makes Adam different from Eve and vice versa? Is it because Adam happens to be a man, and Eve is a woman? Even though this happens to be a true fact, there is a deeper meaning to contrasting Adam and Eve. John Milton’s epic poem, Paradise Lost, gives key differences when contrasting Adam and Eve. Paradise Lost can be summed up as being about the creation of the world, which is known as “the paradise” and the events before and after that surrounded the creation. Along with the creation of the world came the creation of the first two human beings known to mankind, better known as Adam and Eve. Although Adam and Eve were created equally by GOD, these characters shared different thoughts and performed different actions that distinguished them from one another, which lead to them having contrasting strengths and weaknesses.…
Anthem is definitely a dystopian novel. The novel includes almost every definition of a dystopia novel. In the article it says, “The dystopian stories are often stories about survival, their main theme is oppression and rebellion. The environment plays an important role in dystopian depiction. In every dystopian story, there is a back story of war, revolutions, overpopulation and other disasters. Dystopian stories take place in the future, but they are about today and sometimes about yesterday.” In Anthem, Equality had rebelled against the Council and had to survive not getting caught, while hiding in a tunnel. He claimed to have broken many laws, but he did not care because he was trying to prove a point. In Anthem, the Uncharted Forest, the tunnel, and the ravine played important roles in the novel. All these places were places Equality was mainly at. He also kept repeating these places in the novel. He also mentioned a time before the “Great Rebirth,” the “war” between The Evil Ones and others. By this, it is suggested that is how this age all started. The setting of time is confusing. The back cover of the novel tells us that the story takes place in the future, but in the novel it seems to take place in the past because he is writing his story after it happened.…
