In the philosophical epic of Ayn Rand, entitled Atlas Shrugged, Rand allows much room for interpretation as to the meaning of the title of her work. As the reader progresses through the different stages of the book, their translation of the title and its relation to the story evolves. Through parts one and two of the book, one could interpret the title to represent two things: First, it suggests that, Francisco D'Anconia, a titan within the copper and mining industry, is Atlas. It was his strategic collapse of D'Anconia mines that seemed to shake the economy, with his rebellion creating a ripple effect that devastated the economy, as if Atlas used the rest of his strength to make the world suffer. It also, however, indicated to be in reference…

So to look down upon youth who choose to wear there clothes a certain way isn't necessary in some cases. This causes teens to detour from their goals in life because of the worries they have at home. Who wouldn't want to graduate high school, attend a college or university, suceed, and go on to have a professional job doing something they love. On a day-to-day basis instead living life unsecure and not live on a steady income. Everybody wants security in life, it just so happens some people go about having that security in the wrong way. I also agree with another statement that Judge Mathis makes in this article that suburban sociteys may also listen to the same music as urban socities. Urban socities tend to believe that everybody is on the same boat with lesser oppurtunites. But at the end of the day they go back to superior schools and more stable households that not everybody has had the oppurtunity to…

Individuality is a feature that defines us. Individuality is a large aspect of our lives that we do not even realize we have until we see an example of a lack of individuality. Factors that we believe would make us unique compared to everyone else would surely fade away if we were to live in the kind of society that Ayn Rand depicted in her novel, Anthem. This novel demonstrates what life would be like if everyone lost their sense of individuality and had to obey the laws that were set by the government. Struggles regarding this lost privilege are depicted in this dystopian society to present what a loss of individuality would look like if we were to introduce it in our own society. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, the…

In “Anthem,” Ayn Rand emphasizes the diction of the novella, by using the negatively connotative words to achieve a tone of immorality. For example, when Equality is in a tunnel and writing, “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil....there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone. We have broken the laws”(Rand 17). Also, “Strange are the ways of evil. We are false in the faces of our brothers. We are defying the will of our Councils...The evil of our crime is not for the human mind to probe . The nature of our punishment if it be discovered, is not for the human heart to probe”(Rand 36-37). Equality’s thoughts create a feeling of wrongdoing and dishonesty which are factors of…
A society in which no individual has the freedom to choose their own path in life is the exact dark society Ayn Rand portrays in the fictional novel, Anthem. The society in Anthem is shown to be a perfect place where everything is setup so that the "citizens " remain ignorant to the horrid past and live organized, safe lives, until it is revealed that this is a dystopian society in which individuals have no say in how their life will be lived. Anthem's society and modern day US society are polar opposites, U.S society is much more progressive than the society in which Equality, the protagonist in the novel, lives. This is due to horrible…
What makes a human an individual? Would it be the characteristics that make us unique, the usage of the word “I”, and or different personalities? Imagine being born into a society where there is no such thing as “I” or an “individual” and we were only taught plural pronouns. The impact that would have on our personal development and individuality is brutal. The word “we” impacts the lack of individuality by degrading self esteem, replacing the usage of the word “I” in society, and supporting collectivism over individualism.…
Ayn Rand, created Anthem based on the concept of every man should be akin to one another. There can’t be any individualism, they have to accept and undertake whatever the council say, and believe whatever they tell them. On pg. 19 it stated, “ the World Council is the body of all truth. ”…
