Anthem Essay
Anthem Essay In the novella Anthem, Ayn Rand promotes her vision of human nature by creating a society in which Individualism is a sin. The main character, Equality struggles in this world when he questions the belief of Collectivism that his government forces upon its people. Equality eventually realizes "To be free, a man must be free of his brothers”. In other words, he can not succeed in life if he is not independent and different from everyone who is in his society. Collectivism is the difference of someone in a group— whether it is a different race, class or state, it does not matter. In Anthem, Ayn Rand promotes Individualism by critiquing the society of Collectivism and giving everyone individual meaningful names, banishing the word “I” from the language, and not letting each individual do the job they want. Everyone in the society of Collectivism has different than usual names, such as Equality 7-2521. The names reveal the cruel collectivism of Equality 7-2521's society. Individuals are just given names which reflect the collectivist social goals (Harmony, Collective, Union, International) and then are numbered. Nothing in the names show individuality.
Equality 7-2521's own name is ironic. He is represented as far from equal than his people in his society. He stands for liberty and freedom of the individual, which are opposed to equality, since equality means that everyone is the same. Liberty 5-3000, is a character who stands for freedom. What is ironic about her name is that her society would name her Liberty 5-3000, since that is what it destroys. Collective 0-0009, has no irony in his name, he is the perfect spokesperson for collectivism: “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever" (1.8). All in all, in the society of collectivism, they have no identity of their own. They are not allowed to be individual and be unique an do things like fall in love with who they want, cry, feel emotions, and more. In the society of Collectivism, the word “I” doesn’t exist, it is simply banished from their language, as are the words “he” or “she”. The first-person and third-person singular have been abolished by society because they promote individuality, and no one even know we exist anymore. This is one of the most unique parts in the novella, because it shows the collectivist mindset of the society and the characters that are in it. Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000's struggles to find the word "I" are a part of their big struggle to reclaim their freedom and individuality. “I am. I think. I will.” (11.1) Equality 7-2521 shouts these words after he discovers the word “I”. After going through all his life using the word “we” to refer to himself, for the first time he experiences freedom and joy. Once he is able to express himself using his new word, Equality 7-2521 is able to imagine a whole new life for himself and Liberty 5-3000, in which they live on their own land and eat food that they made, and say “I love you”. As one can see, the vocabulary that their society uses prohibits individualism. Lastly, Everyone in Equality 7-2521's society has their lifetime occupation chosen for them by the Council of Vocations, supposedly to show the way in which they can use their talents to serve their society. Once a person’s occupation is chosen, he/she has to live with, eat with, and work with only people in his or her occupation. Sometimes the occupations fit well. Other times, however, they are just given as punishments. Equality 7-2521 is a scientific genius, and his friend International 4-8818 seems to be a natural artist, yet they both wind up Street Sweepers. The reason for that is because the Council does not want them getting in trouble and discovering individualism: "Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of the Students. You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you." (1.20). To conclude, the major theme of Anthem by Ayn Rand, is Individualism. The Collectivist have no identities, they are just a group of people. Equality 7-2521 is in a society where no one has any individual identity. No one thinks for himself or feels anything which results in the council having full control of them. In the novella, the author promotes Individualism by critiquing the society of Collectivism by giving everyone individual meaningful names, banishing the word “I” from the language, and by not letting each individual do the job they want.

The power and knowledge of individualism is lost in the novel Anthem and Ayn Rand does a good job showing us the downfalls and troubles the future might hold. The society that Equality 7-2521 lives in is harsh and believes only in collectivism instead of individualism. The main collective government figures are known as Council of Scholars and Council of Vocations who make the rules and strictly force each brother in the society to follow each rule. They are forced to be alike in every way and live for each other instead of themselves. “We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike” (Rand 19). This is something that is not taken lightly and anyone that goes against this will have to go to the Palace of Corrective Detention…

Ayn Rand originated a philosophical structure on how she views the world. In Rand’s Anthem displays Equality as becoming an individual, but that is not the only reason he breaks away from his civilization. Equality defies the teachings and stands up for what he believes in even if he is killed. Equality’s motivation for creating the light bulb makes him a sacrifice for the advancement of mankind. Rand uses Anthem as an allegory to her own life. Rand grew up in a Communist society, thus making her write about freedom, collectivism, and individualism. Through this she is saying the messenger can be killed but not the message. Equality realizes this when he thinks back to the few great men that tried to stop the change of collectivism. “Perhaps they cried out in protest and in warning. But men paid no heed to their warning. And they, these few, fought a hopeless battle, and they perished with their banners smeared by their own blood. And they chose to perish, for they knew. To them, I send my salute across the centuries, and my pity” (Rand,103). The change in collectivism set their society back hundreds of years.…

“Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual).” Here in the quote the author Ayn Rand explains that you can take away some things from the people, but one thing that you can’t take away is the minority rights. In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand she says about how the world would be like if people were the exact same and they didn’t have these rights. In the world Rand creates people should care more about themselves. She put the idea of individualism in the book Anthem because she thought that it was important to for people to know how important being yourself is and not having to be like everyone else.…

In Anthem and The Giver they both rebel. Equality likes a girl named Liberty. This is extremely against the rules because “boys are not allowed to take notice of girls and girls are not allowed to take notice of boys (pg. 38).” Also, “We shall go to this Council and we shall lay before them, as our gift, the glass box with the power of the sky. (pg. 61)” They have disobeyed the council again because they made this “glass box with the power of the sky”, which is a light bulb. They want to present them the light bulb but they don’t want to get in trouble. In The Giver, the receiver gives vision to baby Gabriel. In a society of many, how can one live to their true potential? One cannot go about finding themselves when criticized and ridiculed for acting and thinking different. This is the idea that Ayn Rand bases her novella, Anthem, upon. Against the society’s laws and beliefs, Ayn’s character, Prometheus, learns “why the best in me had been my sins and my transgressions; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins” (98). He finds that his sins enable him to bring back such a power to the society, even if others are against it. He can use his sins to become better. One cannot stand alone in this obscure society, unless they gain such knowledge that Prometheus has obtained from sinning. Although greatness is obtained by his sins, Prometheus is threatening the beliefs of the one and only society he knows. Committing such sins and transgressions that are needed to gain his knowledge and power forces Prometheus to break the laws of his society. The society views Prometheus as not only sinful but evil, being smarter and taller (18).…

Equality can’t give Liberty 5-300 a “pet” name because “it is a sin to give men names which distinguish them from other men”(41). This is an example of dehumanization with all the girls at the working camp. Each girl in the working camp was given a set of numbers. This meant that each girl was given a new name for all that matter in the camp. The officer in that camp told all of the girls that their new name is going to, and this was the name tag. They called that way at the camp This shows dehumanization to the people at the camp because they are treating them not like a human being. Instead of calling them by their name, they decide on calling them by numbers. They are treated differently than other people.…
