Anthropology helps historians to make sense of the belief in witchcraft by presenting facts. Such scholars such as Francesco Maria Guazzo, who wrote “Pact with the Devil”, and Evan-Pritchard who wrote “Sorcery and Native Opinion”, each interpret witchcraft differently. Evan-Pritchard uses anthropology, or the study of humans past and present, to examine a group in Africa, the Azande and their understanding of witchcraft. Guazzo defines witchcraft by listing specific steps on how to identify a witch, and explaining them extensively. Is it the facts of misfortune that are in the experience of the Azande people, explained by Evans-Pritchard or the identification of witchcraft described by Guazzo that ultimately lead to the execution of Tempel Anneke?…

In many cultures around the world people have the same problems to face as we do. They just refer to them by different words and or different meanings. In “The Spirit Catches You,” a young girl by the name of Lia has a condition that Western Medicine considers to be epilepsy, but in her culture of the Hmong they believe it to be qaug dab peg. Some might consider these two conditions of the body and soul to be the same thing or quite different. Western medicine's way of dealing with the issue is far from the same as Hmong culture and in most cases with different results. As much as Western medicine proves to be right the Hmong are still questionable about accepting a new way of treatment in their culture and so are many other cultures for that matter.…

In the early twentieth century, Arnold van Gennep, a French ethnographer, wrote “The Rites of Passage” in which he describes the process of changing social states of being. This one theory has certainly made a deep impact on anthropological thought due to the fact that it can be applied to a number of situations, both past and present, in which transitions are made. It can also be used as an educational tool for people to use so that they can have a better understanding of the practices of many different cultures. In fact, many examples of the theory of Gennep can be found in ethnographic autobiographies, such as “Sun Chief: The Autobiography of a Hopi” by Don C. Talayesva.…

Additionally, witchcraft for the Azande people provides a sort of an outlet to ‘channel’ their negative, pessimists thoughts and emotions; for example: hatred, envy and bitterness. Similarly to theology and religions in the Western society, witchcraft produces a sort of support and comfort for the Azande people. For example, it gives them a simple, clear and plain reasoning to explain despairing, mournful events and misfortunes and other tragedy. As the famous Marx quote goes: ‘religion is the opiate of the masse.’ For the Azande society, witchcraft is what relieves and cures the sorrowful thoughts and emotions following tragedy while also serving a control and power over the Azande people; teaching and allowing them to discipline themselves…

Through studies and observations by de Waal, the two terms anthromorphism and anthropodenial are said to be opposite from each other. Anthromorphism is the understanding and acceptance to inner life in other animals that are related to human characteristics. Anthropodenial is the denial or acceptance to the understanding of animal inner life that admits to other animals having any human characteristics. What de Waal means by these two terms is that back from when the ancients looked at animals, they never considered looking at them with any kind of physical or emotional appearances that could be similar to those of humans. René Descartes is one who believed and lived an anthropodenial lifestyle, but once Charles Darwin made his opinion and studies known from an anthropomorphism view, all that that was believed of differentiates between animals and humans became an apparent controversy.…
