Antietam Turning Point
McLellan’s assault on General Lee’s army is known as the turning point in the war. With strong strategy the Confederates were taking the upper hand but the large numbers of the Union helped to shift this momentum. The Battle of Antietam was very crucial for the Union army during the war, not only did it stop the encroachment of Southern forces on the North but the Union were now on the attack. The approach towards the war by the North was changed after this day as the goal was now no longer to preserve the Union. As a result of the Battle of Antietam President Lincoln gave his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation five days after the fighting.
