Antigone Mask Project
Daniel Okolo
Antigone Mask Project
In the Greek Theatre, the actors used masks in order to communicate the characters to the audience. One actor could play several different characters, and each character would have several masks, in order to show different emotions.
Choose two different characters in Antigone. Complete the character analysis worksheet below for each character. Design a mask for each of those characters.
Trace the shape of your face on a large sheet of paper. The mask should cover the entire face: from forehead to chin and ear to ear. The base of the mask can be paper, poster board, cardboard, or other similar material. You may create the design with any material, such as markers, color pencils, paint, fabric, beads, etc. The mask may be drawn, painted or collaged, or a combination of media. Use your creativity, but do not merely decorate the mask; the design should magnify the character and emotion expressed in the quotation you selected from the play. DUE: ____________________

“In The Cemetery where Al Jolson is buried” by Amy Hempel uses the word masks throughout the story to convey guilt, fear and unacceptance of death. The first mention of the word mask is in the beginning of the story. We are just beginning to understand that Hempel is describing two people in a hospital, the narrator is visiting her friend who is sick. They are both wearing masks, the narrator checks to make sure that she is still breathing and that she is not “ used to the mask yet.” The friend has her mask hanging loose, a “pro by now.” The fact that the narrator describes her friend at being a “pro” and the fact that the narrator is not used to her masks, tells us that the narrator has not been to visit before.…

My mask was based off of the movie “Predator”. In the movie the character hunts aliens. So I thought this would be a good representation for Jack and his hunters in the book the “Lord of the Flies”. I came to this choice not only I've been wanting to make a mask like this but because the look and feeling of the mask has a dark and threatening look to it. Just like Jack because at one point of the story, Jack kills a pig and thinks that slitting its throat is funny. Showing how dark he is.…

A major theme that can be found across all the regions in the African unit is the connection between the earth and the sky. Throughout a multitude of works, through the use of symbolism, one can see the many representations of the earth and the sky. There is the Gelede mask created by the Yoruba tribe in 1950 that depicts this theme. The Gelede mask is used in the ceremony celebrating women during the Gelede festival. Above the mask you see these figures that depict two snakes and three birds. Birds can be seen as being closer to the sky and snakes as being closer to the earth. Then there is the Kanaga mask created by the Dogon people in 1950. The Kanaga mask contains two beams above it. The upper beam represents the heavens, while the lower…
