How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the IO?
The interactive orals were quite interesting as I could easily connect what was being said to the cultural and contextual considerations of the play Antigone. As a general background, one can possibly notice that Sophocles was more about the art then about the economy. He was the Michelangelo of his time, so to speak. Antigone is a great nationalistic play which illustrated how Greece was at the time, and also of how women were perceived to be much inferior then men. Although Antigone and perhaps Ismene are the main characters of this play, they both reveal different aspects of woman. While Antigone represents the rebel who opposes the law, Ismene symbolizes what a woman at the time would be like, powerless and compelled to obey the rules. Through my perspective, Sophocles wanted to illustrate these two contrasts in order to waken people up. He represented the concerns of people through both Ismene and Antigone’s characters as he portrayed the dull shadows of how woman act through Ismene’s eyes, but he also portrays how woman should act through Antigone’s thoughts and actions. In this play, Antigone is punished for a crime she believed was shameless because she would rather follow the divine laws then man made laws disregarding any human feelings. She buried her brother, Polynices, knowing exactly the punishment she would endure which was death. In a tragic play such as this one, one can only assume that whatever downfall there is it would have to be death. In this case, Sophocles wanted to provoke the people by having his main character die. He wanted to impact but especially influence them with a women’s death especially since her punishment was nonsense because of the supposedly crime she committed was justifiable. Sophocles wanted to represent the voice of democracy through his play Antigone, and he came through it because starting

The most significant theme in Sophocles’ Antigone is whether or not the law of man conquers divine law. Amidst the play, the newly crowned king Creon proclaims that the body of Polyneices will not receive a proper burial, but instead will be publicly shamed and left to be preyed upon by wild animals. Upset with Creon’s mandate, Antigone mourns the death of both of her brothers, Polyneices and Eteocles, and gives Polyneices a proper burial so he can move on to the afterlife.…

In Sophocles' play "Antigone”, the ideas of obeying the law of one’s community and following ones own moral beliefs come into conflict. The plot revolves around two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices having killed each other in an attempted to gain rule and their Uncle Creon gaining power after their deaths. He orders Eteocles given an honorable funeral and Polyneices to be left in the streets to rot. Creon believes that Polyneices' body shall be condemned to this because of his civil disobedience and treachery against the city. However, the dead brothers’ sister, Antigone, believes this unfair to Polyneices and insulting to the Gods.…

The play “Antigone” conveys the interactions between the King Creon and his niece Antigone. Their interaction is different than a normal conversation between a women and male at the time, especially a man with as much power as Creon. Normally, a woman would surrender to the males wishes and keep her thoughts to herself. Antigone separates herself from this commonality by showing no fear as she admits to burying Polyneices, her brother, when the Creon questions her (Line 411). Creon is shocked by this confession because he doesn’t believe Antigone, or anyone for that matter, would know about his decree and blatantly disobey it (Line 414). She explains that any retribution for burying Polyneices would not pain her. Antigone even goes as far to call the king a fool (Lines 431-432). By performing these actions, she is showing her defiance to the decrees of Creon, making his order look inferior, as well as showing her commitment to perform the actions declared by the Gods. She defends her decision by saying that the dead don’t think their burials are less honorable if a traitor is also buried (Line 476). Antigone states her belief that most people in the kingdom would agree with the…

In the tragedy Antigone, there are two central characters who serve as foils for one another. The main protagonist and heroine, Antigone, defies the wishes of the king of Thebes, who is also her uncle named Creon. Beginning as a man devoted to art patronage and falling into a position of power after the death of his brother, Creon begins the play with a declaration that says Polynices, one of Antigone’s brothers, cannot have a proper burial. Antigone disregards Creon’s law and covers Polynices in dirt, sending his soul to the underworld. The author Sophocles’ uses Antigone’s defiant actions to show Creon’s obsession with maintaining the subordination of women. However, it’s important to note that Creon’s obsession may not just pertain to having power over women, but also power over everyone in general.…

After Antigone heard of the orders of Creon, regarding her brother Polynices, she knew that something had to be done for the proper burial of Polynices. Antigone’s sudden rise in spirit and bravery to fight for the honor of her family name is what places her under the category of being an archetypal heroine. The beginning conversation between Antigone and Ismene is essential, thus proving she had already entered the second to last phase in her journey which is departure from her ordinary life to a heroine’s…

The social conventions of the ancient world are not widely known, making it more difficult to truly grasp and appreciate Antigone. If one is accustomed to life today, the more relatable or understandable factor in the play would be state oppression and civil disobedience. That is not to say that there is complete gender equality, but it has advanced considerably since the Classical Era. That is why my considerations of the work were enhanced. The oral elaborated on some of the customs and roles that women occupied and the work they carried out. How they were always with an appointed ‘guardian’ who controlled most aspects of the woman’s life, to make sure that she behaved, whilst the men could do as they pleased. Or how, an heiress would not…

Antigone, a tragedy written by Sophocles is a story about a girl named Antigone, who was sentenced to death by the ruthless king Creon, her uncle after burying her dead brother Polyneices, which was declared against the law after him and his brother fought, killed by the other’s sword. Back then women were not treated as equals like in today’s society, they were sometimes forced into marriage, had to stay home and could not work, and had very few rights to their name. But what if Antigone was a man? In the tragedy Antigone, if Antigone was a man her fate would have been different because it would not have been Antigone’s duty to bury the body, he or she might have had more of a chance to convince Creon it was a noble act to bury the body once found guilty, and there would not have been a law to break because Antigone if a man, would have been next in line to take the heir and not Creon.…

The famous feminist, Gloria Steinem, once said,”Women are not going to be equal outside the home until men are equal in it.” This central idea of equality is relevant to the story Antigone by Sophocles. Considering the circumstances of the story, the minor character, Ismene, is conflicted with standing by the beliefs that men are overall rulers and power over women. Ismene’s emotions and mood fluctuates through the story in a horrible manner. To tragedy unto despair is a major theme in Sophocles most famous tragedy, Antigone.…

Sophocles’ Antigone presents Oedipus’ daughters Antigone and Ismene as a non-conformist and a conformist. In postwar Thebes, Antigone must persuade Ismene to help bury their brother Polyneices, who is branded a traitor by the new king Creon. In a new decree Creon states that he will not give any traitors a proper burial. Antigone’s indignation over Creon’s decree makes her the non-conformist. Because of her loyalty to her brother she wants to “bury him” even though, as Ismene points out, “the new law forbids it.” Ismene’s choice to obey the unjust decree makes her the conformist. Ismene believes that they should just “give into the law” because “the law is strong.” Antigone disobeys out of loyalty to her brother even though she knows she will be punished for her non-conformity. Ismene is a coward and even though she conforms in the beginning, it does not stop Creon from making her guilty by association.…
