The Boston Tea Party is a very famous political protest that occurred on December 16, 1773. This protest was when many rebels that called themselves the Sons of Liberty boarded 3 ships and dumped hundreds of dollars of tea into the Boston Harbor. The men dressed up as Indians (Natives) to hide their identity. They threw over 340 chest of tea overboard, which took over 3 hours for over 100 people to throw the tea overboard. In total they threw over 90,000lbs of tea and over what would be about $1,000,000 today. This was an act of protest against the tea act and it infuriated the British that they passed a new act called the Intolerable Act in 1774 (I will talk about it more later). The American Anti-Slavery Society was an abolitionist group that fought to end slavery in America. The Society was started in 1833 by William Lloyd Garrison. This took place two years after the Nat Turner Slave Rebellion and Southerners wanted to increase restrictions on slavery. The Society was a response to the increased restrictions. The society grew to around 250,000 members and had over 1000 local charters. Members included people like Susan B. Anthony and Fredrick Douglas. The south was not happy with the growth of the society because they feared it foreshadowed Congress ending slavery. Women used many different methods to earn the right to vote in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Alice Paul the leader of the NWP and she lead the Women’s Suffrage Act. She was willing to die in order for the women to get the vote. The women used many methods to try to win the fight, they picketed in front of the white house at one point. Every day they would go out with flags and banners and stand at the gate. One day the police showed up accused them for obstructing traffic and arrested them. In the parade they had floats and banners, lines upon lines of women walking and protesting against the law. Frederick Douglass felt so strongly about abolishing slavery that he went to talk to the then president (Abraham Lincoln), and he also wrote a book about being a slave. He wrote the book in an effort to make people realized the torture, endless work hours, the abuse, everything a slave went through, in a hope to make people realize how awful slavery was. However when he wrote this book, it became very popular almost immediately, so he was forced to flee to Europe before he could be arrested and put in jail. On September 3, 1838 Frederick Douglass was on the Eastern Shore as a slave doing labor but one night Frederick Douglass decided to disguise himself as a sailor and boarded a ship to New York, that night Frederick was freed. In New York Frederick met a woman named Anna Murray they decided get married and adopt the last name douglass, together they decided to have five children. Frederick, Anna, and their five children were doing fine, but Frederick who was now a famous orator, decided to leave the U.S. and move to Europe and speak in places like Great Britain and Ireland for two years in order to avoid being re-enslaved. It is a way for society to reform itself to reflect its current values while maintaining its fundamental ideals. Some may argue civil disobedience is a “slippery slope” leading to anarchy or it cannot be justified in a democracy. People (including women) started to fight for slaves to have right and to be free because they were humans like everyone else, and they claimed it to be unconstitutional to refuse them freedom.
