Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier was a French scientist who was known as the father of modern chemistry. Not only did he reform chemical technology, he constructed the metric system and named oxygen and hydrogen. The world has greatly benefited from Lavoisier’s studies.(Loosli) Antoine Lavoisier was born on August 26, 1743 to a wealthy French family. His father was a lawyer, and Lavoisier was expected to grow up to be one also. Lavoisier studied law at college Mazarin only to please his family. At age 21 Lavoisier fulfilled his own dream of studying science. At age 25 Lavoisier entered the Academy of Science, which was a very high honor. Antoine Lavoisier is considered “the master-mind of the chemical revolution.” Lavoisier married 13 year old Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze in 1771. She made sketches of her husband’s laboratory. Also, she helped translate Lavoisier’s work into English, which made scientists world-wide learn of his work. “Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier discovered no new substances. He made few new improvements to laboratory methods, yet he will be remembered to the end of time as the father of modern chemistry. He took the works of others, most notably that of Priestly, Black, Cavendish and Sheele and explained it.” Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier was guillotined on May 8, 1794 when he was 51 years old. He was found guilty of connections to the Ferme General. He a great and notable scientist who will always be remembered.

Daniel Bernoulli never imagined himself to come so far into life as he did with becoming a scientist. Bernoulli was born on February 8, 1700 in Groningen, Netherlands and died on March 17, 1782 in Basil, Switzerland (Daniel Bernoulli Biography). He was the son of Johann Bernoulli and Dorothea Faulkner. He had one older brother named Nicholas (II) Bernoulli. Daniel was born into a “family of leading mathematics” (Daniel Bernoulli Biography). Bernoulli was a doctor, mathematician, and a Swiss physician (Famous Scientists). 250 years ago, Daniel Bernoulli discovered that the kinetic theory molecules moved around and bumped into each other (Bernoulli’s Principle — History). Besides discovering mathematics and physics,…

He created the reflecting goniometer, improved the Gravesand heliostat, and Fahrenheit’s aerometer (“Jacques” Britannica). His works with ballooning lead to his discovery that the volume of a gas is a direct function of its temperature (“Jacques” Physics). He called this Charles law and it is considered the second fundamental property of gasses (Schueller). He never published his works but later his student found the same thing, published it, and gave him the…

Chemistry was more than 100 years behind astronomy and anatomy. One chemist, Robert Boyle, found that the volume of a gas varies with the pressure exerted on it. He was also the one who discovered “little particles of all shapes and sizes”. Boyle said that these particles were the basic building blocks of everything. They come in all shapes and sizes. These particles would later be called atoms and put into the table of elements by Antoine Lavoisier. Lavoisier was able to show that chemicals combined to make things, such as oxygen and hydrogen forming water. This was the beginning of modern…

Scientists… The remarkable people who have shaped our world today. From inventions of the light bulb, to the structure of the atom. These experts have engaged in a certain field of science and excelled to come up with a numerous amount of inventions, and theories. Frederick Sanger followed the work on insulin and developed more in depth methods for studying the proteins structure and the centers of particular enzymes. He also assisted two other scientist in determining the amino acid sequences of DNA information. Frederick Sanger’s discovery in science has changed theories and shaped our science world today.…

Linus Pauling is said to be one of the most significant scientists to have ever lived. Given Pauling’s wide array of accomplishments, ranging from winning the nobel peace prize to solving complex atomic structures, it is easy to see why he has earned the respect of so many in the scientific community. Pauling was born on February 28, 1901 in Portland, Oregon. Even as a young boy he took interest in science; a friend introduced him to a toy chemistry set, and instantly young Linus was hooked and began conducting basic experiments in his basement. Pauling’s interest in chemistry never subsided, in fact he excelled in chemistry throughout his high school and college career (“Biographical Information”).…

Henry-Louis Le Chatelier’s principle provided to be very valuable for developing more efficient chemical processes. Le Chatelier was a very educated man, earning many degrees in his early life. After only two years as a mining engineer he became a chemistry lecturer in 1877, where he had a very well equipped laboratory. After conducting many experiments his work led him to the study of thermodynamics. His work led to the principle we know today as Le Chatelier’s principle, which outlines ‘how systems in chemical equilibrium maintain their…
