Antropologia - Paper

One of the strengths of this book is the historic content. The author recorded a great deal of history about the life of the Pueblo Indians before the Spanish conquest. Customs and rituals were cleverly depicted. The story was told of not just what the Indians did, but also gave some premise as to why. The frequent explanations gave appreciable insight into the lives of the Pueblo Indians. Several traditional stories were included which illustrated what the Indians believed their genesis to be. The stories provided an engaging backdrop to the book. Their traditions were portrayed in a neutral light, without signifying a positive or negative influence on their way of life.…

The question of how a small Spanish army was able to conquer one of the greatest ancient empires in history is one that has been raised countless times. Often there are no simple answers and frequently super natural omens and religious understandings are presented as the reason. The Spanish were also quick to present the answer that they were simply more intelligent, technically and morally and that they had a superior morale. Historians such as Prescott present the answer that Europeans will always triumph because they have superior mental and moral qualities.1 However historians like Clenninden, Fernandez-Armesto, Townsend and Toderov have argued against these explanations, considering them ‘Conquistador myth’. 2 This essay will discuss the traditional arguments and consider the flaws they present, aiming to challenge the idea of the ‘Conquistador myth’. The aim is in line with arguments by Toderov and Clenninden to prove that the Europeans did not manage to conquer the Aztec empire because of their natural superiority but rather a range of factors that included using different cultural understandings to their advantage, including their weapons, their native allies and the delayed initial reaction of the Aztecs.…

Marco Polo’s book was more widely read. It was both believed and doubted. Some called him the ‘great liar.’ And some of what he said is made up or exaggerated. Marco spent seventeen years in the Orient serving the Great Khan, the ruler of the Mongols and Chinese. He easily learned new languages making him useful to the Mongol ruler. Later in life, Marco was taken prisoner during a war. He told the tale of his adventures to fellow prisoners and one of them wrote it down. His tale of the riches and wonders of the east inspired people to seek an easier sea route to China and other eastern lands. They wanted a direct route that would avoid the Arab traders who insisted on being intermediaries.…
