Antwone Fisher: The Directorial Debut of Denzel Washington
I missed "Antwone Fisher" in the theaters, but when I saw it at home recently on DVD, I found it very emotionally involving. I realize the film is somewhat formulaic and sometimes overly sentimentalized, but I liked it a lot anyway. It seems to me the movie has an underlying earnestness, and it managed to bring tears to my eyes.
There really is a man named Antwone Fisher, and you can see and hear him on a featurette on the DVD. Fisher is credited with writing the screenplay for the movie "Antwone Fisher" based on his life experiences. He has also written a memoir titled "Finding Fish" about those experiences.
The film "Antwone Fisher" marks the directing debut of Denzel Washington, who also appears in the movie in a supporting role. The central character, however, is played by newcomer Derek Luke, and I thought he was outstanding in the title role. The title character's love interest is played by Joy Bryant, another newcomer, and I found her to be a charming and attractive actress, but the script doesn't develop her character much.
In the film, Antwone Fisher (Luke) is a 24-year-old African-American enlisted man in the U.S. Navy. Antwone repeatedly gets in trouble for fighting and is ordered to see Dr. Jerome Davenport (Washington), a Navy psychiatrist. While Antwone has a series of meetings with Dr. Davenport, the young sailor begins a romantic relationship with a lovely young enlisted woman named Cheryl (Bryant), who works at the Base Exchange. All this takes place in the San Diego area, and as the story develops, we are treated to some nice shots along the California coast.
Through Antwone's conversations with Dr. Davenport, we find out what has made him such a troubled young man: Antwone's father died before he was born, his mother abandoned him, and he was raised in a foster home where he was abused. The needy Antwone wants Dr. Davenport and his wife to be his surrogate parents, and I thought it was interesting the way the psychiatrist handled this

The movie Antwone Fisher is a personal narrative about a young African-American man’s struggle with his past. The main character is Antwone Fisher, a Navy Petty Officer whose father was killed two months before his birth and mother abandoned him shortly after his birth. Antwone is raised in an abusive foster home by Rev. Tate and his wife Ms. Tate. After an argument with Ms. Tate, Antwone is kicked out of the foster home and forced into a life of homelessness as a teenager for a short period of time and then joins the Navy. Once aboard ship, he is directly involved in a fight and is sent to see a Navy psychiatrist, Dr. Jerome Davenport. Antwone’s reluctance to talk to Dr. Davenport during the initial visit, results in Dr. Davenport informing Antwone that his first session doesn’t start until he begins to talk and that there will only be a total of three sessions. Eventually, the two develop a working relationship that evolves into something more meaningful as Antwone begins to open up and talk about his past.…

He mentions to him that he makes his evaluation after 3 sessions. Resistance begins after this and continues for several sessions. Because the psychiatrist was trying to give an evaluation of Antwone, this movie gave an example of a counselor’s assessment rather than simply finding a diagnosis. On a side note, Dr. Davenport, as a psychiatrist on a navy base, would be used to this type of resistance, but watching him sit around patiently waiting for Antwone to say something was surprising for me. I would have expected him to take his not talking for the first 3 sessions as part of his evaluation and just send him on his way. Instead Dr. Davenport patiently waits, reads, eats, and watches until Antwone finally slips up by clearing his throat, which strikes up a conversation. During the first official session, Dr. Davenport waits for him to speak, as if taking on a person-centered approach and waiting for him to share. Antwone feels uncomfortable and asks if he [Davenport] is supposed to ask him questions. The response to this was not what I expected. I thought Dr. Davenport might come out with how he normally does his sessions, a schedule of things, or even a comment…

As many critics say, Minority Report is one of the movies that has a very realistic vision upon future. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Minority Report is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. It’s a neo-noir science fiction movie and was officially released on June, 2002. The action in the movie happens in 2054, in Washington D.C and in Northern Virginia. An elite squad that enforces law named “PreCrime”, eliminates crime virtually from Washington D.C. The whole story revolves around John Anderton, captain of “PreCrime”. With the help of three gifted humans called “precogs”, the squad manages to stop crimes before they take place. But the system seems to make an error, when it shows that John Anderton will commit a murder in the next 36 hours. So a “manhunt” begins, a “manhunt” of himself, as Anderton is determined to prove that the system is wrong and to find out the truth. He also believes that one of the “precogs” predictions’, namely Agatha’s, will help him find the truth of this “minority report”.…

A scene that differs greatly from the book to the movie on hitting our emotions was when the girls are taken away from their families. In the movie, this scene is extremely dramatic. We get a film-shot back and forth of the girls leaving with their expressive faces, as well as the mothers crying and moaning, falling on the floor out of desperation and exasperation. Visually we see the girls being taken away, slowly getting increasingly further away. This makes it extremely emotional and expressive for the viewer. In the book, the expressions of the little girls are described as “…tears streaming down their cheeks” (44) and “The two frightened and miserable girls began to cry, silently at first, then uncontrollably…” (45). Although when reading this we get a reasonably clear image in our…
