Concept Check 1.1: 1.) A biosphere has an ecosystem that consists of all living things in an area. An ecosystem consists of communities which hold organisms that live in a specific area. A community consists of populations of all the individual organisms in a specific area. A population consists of living things called organisms. Organisms break down into organs and organ systems which are more complex parts of organisms. Organs and Organ Systems are created by tissues which is what’s in an organism. Tissues have cells in them that are the broken down elements that form the structure of tissues. Cells can break down even farther into organelles which make up cells. Organelles are made up of molecules that are made of 2 or more atoms. 2.) The sharp spines of a porcupine exemplified Organisms interact with their environments, exchanging matter and energy. The cloning of a plant from a single cell exemplified Energy Conversion; Cells are an organism’s basic units of structure and function. A hummingbird using sugar to power its flight exemplified Energy conversion, Organisms interact with their environments exchanging matter and energy. 3.) New properties emerge at each level in the biological hierarchy-Growth and Development; Organisms interact with their environments exchanging matter and energy- flowers; Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization- the gills on a fish helps them swim under water; Cells are an organism’s basic units of structure and function-red cell carries oxygen throughout your body; The continuity of life is based on heritable information in the form of DNA- DNA is the swirly imprints on your fingers and your hair; Feedback mechanisms regulate biological systems- electronic engineering.
