Key Concepts:
1-1 Biologists explore life from the microscopic to the global scale
1-2 Biological systems are much more than sums of their parts
1-3 Biologists explore life across the diversity of species
1-4 Evolution accounts for life’s unity and diversity
1-5 Biologists uses various forms of inquiry to explore life
1-6 A set themes connects the concepts of biology
Overview:
Biology- the study of life (Page 2)
Concept 1-1:
• The study extends from the microscopic scale of the molecules and cells that makes up organisms to the global scale to the entire living people o We can divide the enormous range into different levels of biological organization.
A Hierarchy of Biological Organization
1. The Biosphere- consists of all the regions of land, and most bodies of water
2. Ecosystems- consists of all living things in a particular area, along with nonliving components of the environment with which life interacts.
3. Communities- the entire array of organisms inhabiting a particular ecosystem is a biological community.
4. Populations- consists of all the individual species living within the bounds of a specified area
5. Organisms- individual living things
6. Organs and Organ Systems- the structural hierarchy of life continues to unfold to the architecture of the more complex systems
7. Tissues- an integrated group of cells with a common function, structures or both.
8. Cells-life’s fundamental unit of structure and function
9. Organelles- one of several formed bodies with specialized functions suspended in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells
10. Molecules- two or more atoms held together by covalent bonding
A Closer Look at Ecosystems
• Each organism interacts continuously with its environment, which includes other organisms as well as nonliving factors o Both organism and environment are affected by the interactions with other life
Ecosystem Dynamics
• The dynamics of any ecosystem include two major
